I've got a decent little collection of Ohtani's but even as good as the prices are i think we all can imagine what they will be if he's able to pull out an MVP or at least put up an MVP type season since we all know the Angels are not a good team, and it hurts to say as they've always been my favorite team.

What are the rest of you guys thinking that hold way better cards than me? When are you looking to sell while we see prices keep climbing?
I'm not one of those guys but I'm pretty chirpy.

I don't have any of his good cards( pissed off I sold his Topps chrome refractor before the season started). The only cards I'm selling are his Update stuff. I just sold a PSA9 rainbow foil US1 and a Gold 3HR Update card( without the RC logo) to Japan. I'll sell off the rest of the base Update stuff very soon.

I'm keeping all my base topps chrome cards and most of his Topps 700 cards. I'd like to grade some of that stuff when PSA comes back. I have 2 sky blue Bowman's that I'd like to keep and his HHN action variation which I would've graded were it not for a printer dot in the margin.

I tried very hard to hit something decent of his in 2018 but no luck. Kudos to those who bought his better cards last year. Very well done.

There's an old thread about it on the forums from 2018 as well if you want to search.

What a sick card.

Thanks for the link.

WOW! what a big trade! And featured by ESPN!
(I added screenshots of the deal (14 cards + $4k cash for the Ohtani TC Batting Super.)

How do you currently feel about your Ohtani Transcendent Super Auto and TC Pitching Super?

Haven't kept up with this thread... This might have been mentioned.

Does he take part in the Home Run Derby, get an AB in the game and pitch in the game at some point?

Just got back from PSA. I thought it had a shot at a 10, but I'm happy. Welcome home.

Dude.

That’s such a sweet card and an amazing price !

Can anyone explain to me why the 2018 Bowman chrome #1 is selling for more than the 2018 Topps chrome #150 and Topps chrome update HMT1 cards? I have not seen this pattern for any other players from 2018 (Acuna Jr., Soto, Devers etc).

You should only sell if you don't think he's this good. He is this good. Don't sell. As for the MVP, he's really lucky that Trout and Buxton both got hurt. I don't know that he could've caught those guys at the rate they were playing.

Another reason I believe the Topps holiday RC has room to move. I know many do not care for it because of it being a gimmick, but again he is hitting. The metallics might be even better.

Hitting options non-Panini

Topps Gallery (posed with bat on shoulder)
Bowman Chrome
Bowman Best (post swing)
Finest
Topps Update Rookie Debut
Topps chrome Update Rookie Debut
Topps Holiday

Yeesh. And how many of those are just portraits? I know his Heritage High Number isn't even him hitting, it's just a portrait of him with a bat.

I actually bought and subbed three metallics last year and they all came back 10s. No way I'm selling them at these price points but I guess they're something for me to keep my eye on.

So people are willing to pay a premium for a hitting pose vs pitching?

Traditionally? No. But Ohtani has brought more casual collectors+hype chasers from other sports into the mix and those types obviously prefer hitting. If Ohtani slumps or gets hurt, the kind of stuff that they have bid up will fall the quickest.

He is also batting in GQ but I hate that product. Heritage and Gallery are both just portraits.

I have 2 metallics to submit. Chasing Soto/acuna benefited me because I have over 50 Ohtani RC’s I have located and will grade.

Wait until people actually start watching baseball. Around the All-Star break we should see even more run up IF he is still tracking for the lead in HR. He hit his 15th last night.

With the huge/quick rise in prices are people pricing in that he will be the AL MVP? I think Ohtani is the most talented player and fun to watch and follow. But am somewhat worried to buy more at these prices as I think Vlad Jr. is now the AL MVP favorite.

Vlad is producing, but Ohtani will have a bigger upward push if he keeps this up. The Asian market is huge and those dollar have not totally moved into his market YET!

I hear what you are saying! If true that would mean buying to flip would be fine. But what about buying to hold longer term?

The race is still wide open. Buxton, Trout, Xander are all still in the hunt. I would bet on Ohtani being the MVP because his hitting isn't good enough on it's own. He doesn't hit well for average(.269 right now) He needs a really good pitching slate to do it. I do not think he pitches over 100 innings this season. We are 1/3 of the way through the season and his pitching record is 1-0(this matters to voters). His last start his velocity was down HUGE. There was one innocent explanation for it but to me it's a warning sign about his durability and that they will likely start pitching him less often even if he stays healthy. There's a good chance that we go a few weeks at some point in the season where they don't let him pitch.

If he only starts 12 games and finishes with 80 innings and 3 pitching wins, is that going to be enough to boost him over a position player blowing him away in WAR? Doubt it

That is how I am seeing it too at this point (a lot of things can change in the future).

Ohtani also has a hitting image with the Angel's team set. Those appear to be picking up some steam as well.

Not the answer. Tatis has a BC Rookie that is half the price of his Topps Chrome rookie and obviously has the same print run dynamics.
