I agree that he's boring. I watch Angels game, as a big Ohtani fan, and I love seeing Trout play. Watching anyone that great is a treat for a baseball fan. But he just isn't interesting, on a personal level. I have zero interest in watching a Mike Trout interview. I seek out interviews of other (younger, flashier) players. This spills over into cards, there's nothing driving me to want to collect Trout, outside of #invest, and that's no fun.

This is what isn't boring. Who cares about watching his interviews? I watch hours of baseball every day. You know how many interviews I watch? Zero. The excitement comes from his play on the field. I'll never understand why the collateral stuff even matters. I guess it's personal preference, because I don't get enamored with celebrity culture at all. I think the people who are attracted to that sort of thing are the ones who find him boring.

The people saying Trout is boring would have hated baseball in the 1920s-1960s. They would have said Gehrig, Williams, Mantle, Mays and Aaron were boring.

So if a guy isn't on par with two of the best players in the game then he's boring? Yes I'd rather watch Trout than Soto. Tatis? More exciting than Trout. Why is Soto more exciting to watch? Because he shimmies his hips when he gets a ball?

This is so bizarre. You love watching Trout play the actual sport, but since he isn't "flashy" in the 5 minute post game interview you find him boring. More of an interview fan than a baseball fan? I don't get it

Being boring on the field and being boring off the field are two completely different things. Trout is 100% boring off the field - he doesn’t market himself, he isn’t flashy, etc. But if you think he’s boring on the field you either haven’t watched him play the last 10 years or you’re definition is boring is way different than mine.

Personally I prefer players to be great on the field and couldn’t care less if they don’t give exciting interviews post-game

I just can't stand the "act like you been there" culture, and guys giving canned answers in interviews. Players are literally trained to not display their personality, and I don't like it. I'm drawn to collect players that are/were good at baseball, and also had interesting stories/personalities (Ichiro, Minnie Minoso), or are larger than life (Jackie Robinson, Griffey). I also collect cards that, imo, have a lot of personality (90's parallels, and Topps Venezuelans).

If the only criteria for collecting focus is "players that are/were great at baseball", that's too wide of a net for me, I'd rather go deep on a few specific players/sets. So there has to be something else that draws me to a player other than just They're Good.

Also, this is all just my personal preference, not claiming that everyone should think like this.

Not true. Creativity and personality are awesome for the game. If you don’t think it has always been that way…look at the Yankees. Reason why Ruth was so much more popular than Gehrig and why Mantle so much more popular than Maris. Boring is Boring

And it's not like I dislike Trout. As a baseball fan and card collector, I've had the thought many times "I should own some Trout cards!". I've picked up a few cards of his in the past, but they never last. As soon as a cool card pops up of a guy/set that I PC, and I need funds to go after it, the Trout cards get sold off. If I had unlimited money, then I'd own some Trout cards.

don't know how you can say that the best player in the league, a sure fire HOFer, is "boring".

he doesn't have the charisma or flash of guys like Tatis, Soto, or Acuna, but he's an awesome ball player who just goes out and plays the game, and plays it well, on a very bad baseball team.

i do understand what you're saying though about it spilling into his cards, people nowadays want flash and glitz and glamour, so i get it.

my favorite NBA team is the Spurs, so Trout is basically Tim Duncan. but you all don't want Duncan, you want Kobe, if that makes sense.

He is boring when you compare him to all the other young stars in MLB.

But I don’t think he cares. Also doesn’t care about winning obviously.

He is who he is.

Scratched just before first pitch.

A few days ago it was announced that he still expects to play in the ASG. If he doesn't play tomorrow... should he still play in a meaningless game when he hasn't played a meaningful game in the last week?

He should absolutely play in the all star game if he can…. And let’s be honest, no such thing as a meaningful Angels game.

You should read some of Mantles comments late in his life about wishing he was more like Musial. There’s also an interview with Costas where Bob related a story where he spoke with Mantle about regrets and Costas says Mantle told him that Musial was a guy who go got the most out of his potential, whereas Mantle didn’t. As a dad myself, if I had boys playing baseball still, I’d rather them be like Gehrig than Ruth. Character means more than popularity in the long run.

Acuna
Soto
Tatis

Three tremendously talented young stars, 2 with WS rings, one with WS experience and impact in the postseason helping his team win (Soto). Acuna and Tatis have yet to do that although Acuna helped drive ATL last year towards the WS unfortunately getting hurt late. Tatis has yet to play deep in the playoffs but has been good his few games.

That being said compared to their respective years, Trout had 1 MVP and 3 2nd place finishes by year 4 whereas none of the above have won an MVP yet.

Here’s what I’m getting from all this. If you’re good and play the game the right way and don’t act like a fool on the field, you’re boring. And there’s a difference between having fun and acting like a fool on the field.

So much for more ASG stats......

Mike Trout will sit out of the 2022 All-Star Game in Los Angeles with back spasms.
Trout was officially replaced by Ty France on the American League roster for the All-Star Game as he deals with back spasms. Byron Buxton will start at center field. The 30-year-old superstar has been dealing with the issue since earlier in the week. He will take the All-Star break to recover.
