But this doesn’t mean “no police presence” which is what is brandied about online. That’s the silliness.

Probably looking to adopt a Camden, NJ model.

Is there a time limit on how long BLM graffiti should remain on a wall? Apparently these ladies didn't get the memo:

Those who want and try to defund the police should all have 911 blocked from their phones, so they can never call for help - problem solved

Looks like Camden actually doubled their number of cops. They're just technically Camden County now, instead of Camden the city. And are from mostly the nicer towns outside of Camden.

Are people that are calling for change really going to be OK with more police? That's really not the message I'm hearing. The loudest message, at least.

'The transformation began after the 2012 homicide spike. The department wanted to put more officers on patrol but couldn’t afford to hire more, partly because of generous union contracts. So in 2013, the mayor and city council dissolved the local PD and signed an agreement for the county to provide shared services. The new county force is double the size of the old one, and officers almost exclusively patrol the city. (They were initially nonunion but have since unionized.) Increasing the head count was a trust-building tactic, says Thomson, who served as chief throughout the transition: Daily, noncrisis interactions between residents and cops went up. Police also got de-escalation training and body cameras, and more cameras and devices to detect gunfire were installed around the city.

I think it probably exists on a spectrum.

I read police not responding to ODs and letting other emergency services handle it. Who knows.

The “no police force” thing isn’t a reality, no matter how many lunatics scream it. I didn’t know about the Camden thing until these Minny chants started. Pretty astounding and well done for Camden.

In my city (Austin):

APD office paid roughly $75K starting pay
Travis County Sheriff paid roughly $40K starting pay

Seems like you could get more bang (great pun) for your buck if you reappropriate those funds.

A little about about Camden from that article (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...ice-department)..

'Like most matters of policing, however, Camden’s success story isn’t that simple. Members of the police force are now more likely to live in the suburbs than in the city of Camden, according to the local NAACP chapter. “Ninety percent of Camden’s population is minority—we have a lot of young individuals who don’t look like us that are getting these jobs,” says Kevin Barfield, the chapter president.'

So double the cops.. and many of them white. That's going to fly?

Heard a story on the news about the protests. The CDC said that it's "too early to know how the protests will affect the pandemic". They're "monitoring the protests". But they can take the time and effort to issue a statement about how tear gas can make the spread worse. Lol. Seriously.

Looks like someone may have just been shot at the Seattle protest.

Coronavirus cases are increasing in 22 states and Puerto Rico, with sharp spikes in states like Arizona, Arkansas and South Carolina.

Deaths still trending downward which is awesome.

I really hope not. But the death of one man, as wrong as it was, has turned into how many deaths now? How many injured?

Woul be interesting to know how many of the people (younger folks, especially) at the protests end up getting tested afterwards. I can't imagine it's that many.

Probably will see those numbers in a few weeks if I had to guess. Will also be interesting to see if anyone traces spikes in areas where people went home from protests.

The CDC will surely be on it. By 2024.

Was the guy that got shot trying to yank the guy out of the car? Did he run over people blocking his way or something?

Well, from the video looked like the guy was trying to protect himself after his car was blocked and people started reaching into his car to attack him. Oh well.

Looking at Alabama, about flat and social distancing is virtually 0. According to the graph below, it's about -12%.
