I've never been a fan of having a sub come in who has not even had a touch before penalty kicks. As soon as Kelly O'Hara set up you could tell she was going to miss it.
I definitely do not think Rapinoe and Morgan hurt their legacy at all. Their legacy was already cemented. Rapinoe is 38 and Morgan is 34 and this is just a case where age caught up to them.

Well Rapinoe is retiring so she is done Internationally. I suspect Morgan will be on the 27 roster but should be a sub and sub only. Ertz retiring at 31 sucks, not shocking hsving a child, but she still got it especially after being out so long. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

She doesn’t do PK. Why the first 5 making theirs is important cause if you go 7-8 shooters you are chancing players who don’t do PK having to make it. Only thing I will question is Ertz should have been selected after the first 5. She has taken PK. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Turns out the young US players aren't as good as people thought - that's the problem being in the NWSL bubble. Like I said the other day, I think you lot would have done much better if Macario was fit, and excluding Fishel is just cutting your nose off to spite your face. Frustrating result and I think the player that was missed the most is Mallory Swanson (she would've been the star of the team). Rapinoe was flat out awful in every way this WC....she should have never seen the pitch and just been a mentor to the youngsters on the sidelines/practice.

Countless young players make their mark at world cups, european cups and everything else. This weird opinion that players should be in their mid-twenties doesn't make any sense. Infact, this WC would have been the perfect time to blood someone like Thompson with more minutes. You couldn't hit a barn door with a banjo.
Bellingham was 17 years old and had played just four top-flight club games when he made his England debut. 'If you're good enough, you're old enough' is a quote BTW by one of the greatest football managers in history. Last edited by YayNJ; 08-06-2023 at 09:31 AM. |

Arrogant clowns earned their loss. Hopefully they learn from it.

Doubtful. Nobody learns from their mistakes nowadays. They just double down.

Especially when the media will continue to coddle them. Best case scenario is we fall behind the rest of the world and they become as irrelevant as the men's team.

Interesting how this is supposed to be an indictment of the NWSL yet #2 Germany crashing out in the group stage apparently says nothing about European football.
Nobody wants to hear about advanced metrics after a loss but most of them show broadly similar performance to the past couple tournaments which were very touch and go. 2015 and 2019 were won on razor thin margins where the US got some good luck and 2023 was lost on equally thin margins where they got some bad luck. Just the way the ball bounces sometimes.

Thompson is 18 and just graduated high school. So glad you are an amazing judge of talent that you have already proclaimed she sucks. What did she play? Like 12 minutes. Rodman and Smith played in their first cup and will play be playing in many more. Rodman was one of the US best players today, probably outside of Girma, who also was also Playing in her first cup. This was a changing of the guard year for women’s soccer. By no means would I said this team was heavy favors going into this cup. They lost to the 3 team in the world in PK after pretty much dominating for 120 minutes. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

This team was the equivalent of the Athens US men’s basketball team. That was a necessary turning point for US men’s basketball program. Hope the USWNT can find the same results.

It was never a cohesive team, and divided we fall.

I am stunned to hear that the US is out. The team was loaded with talent and I thought they were just going to steamroll over everyone.
Anyhow, I am glad this is over because the match times were stupid! And of course, by the time I would wake up then all the news would be out there. It's not like I could just hole myself up in my bedroom watching replays! Now, let's go back to focusing on the NWSL! |

Because they dominated a Top 5 team in the world but couldn't score and lost on PKs. I guess?

You wont find much talk about Germans, or European women's soccer in general on here because it's 90% American dudes in this thread. I'd love to talk about late 80's and early 1990's Doncaster Belles, but I'm not sure 1980's women's football penetrated the USA ... though perhaps US/NWSL fans should - If you are at all interested in Rapinoe and how she changed US soccer, you might find Julie Chipchase interesting - she was doing it in England in the 1980's and 90's. She never gets any credit for it (because she's a woman) but the work she did on transitional tactics was pretty ground-breaking and you see it in the modern men's game today. It's a messy situation because we've been told for years now that being patriotic often means criticizing our country.
The USWNT has been an inspiration to many different groups—but unfortunately in this particular tournament they showed up cocky and unprepared before bowing out early. |
