I still think it's funny how we have people who we have never seen in the soccer forum, especially the women's forum showing up talking crap.

We really know what this is about, but won't go there..

To be fair, this isn't exactly an easy thread to slip into. It's a bit clique-y

Eh, I played 16 seasons including some college ball and I only pop in for the really big events.

But then, I rarely venture beyond Football and Off Topic. I wouldn't be so quick to judge people—it comes across kind of bigot-ish.

Now, let's go back to focusing on the NWSL!
they were "stupid" because the US team blew it.

the schedule was made entirely for the winner of group E to be played in prime time in the US and they did not win the group. schedule is on them not winning.

Naeher was great though. She guessed right on almost every PK, Sweden just found the right spots. It was her teammates who couldn't find the back of the net in 90 minutes or when it mattered most. (Rapinoe was the biggest disappointment and didn't belong on the field.)

Conversation in the soccer forum is dead. As it is across most of the board. There’s maybe 50 true DAUs on this board.

It was expected though.

As soon as the game was over, I knew Twitter was going to be flooded with "I'm glad they lost" comments. Rarely anything about the game itself.

Correct. 50 might be a little light. But I doubt it's over 100.

It's wrong to assume that everyone is 'glad they lost' for the same reason. I get the impression that quite a few people think it's a wake up call that the US federation need, and hopefully the impetus to get rid of the coach.

I was fairly happy when Leeds got relegated last season because it meant we were finally rid of our toxic owners.

I've been happy when England have lost in the past because we'd been treading water. I was happy when the 'golden generation' finally all buggered off too.. Ashley Cole, John Terry et al.

Plenty of reasons for quietly being happy for change - social media just meant people who'd never be heard in the past have the equivalent of shouting through a bullhorn directly into your ear.

Didn't say everyone. Just said there are tons of comments with that tone and some from non-Americans saying that the team/media got too cocky and don't feel sorry for them (which is right though).

I think this is good on the long term, for both the team and the media. There are things to change and mainly, an acknowledgement that the world has caught up and they have to actually compete with everyone now. No easy passes.

But it sucks seeing so little about players like Ertz and Naeher who were great and who have played their last World Cup. It should always be more about the game and the players and not the politics around them.

First thing they need to do is get a new coach.. Early eliminations in the Olympics and now Cup should mean the end of Vlatko..

Randy Waldrum or Laura Harvey are the top 2 on my list.

While I am certainly not happy that the U.S. lost, I think it's more of a "it needs to break completely before it can be fixed properly" thing.

They've been so good for so long that other teams have enough tape to learn their tactics, strengths and weaknesses. Other teams have put in the time and effort needed to improve their strengths and reduce their weaknesses and that's improved women's soccer/football tremendously.

The U.S. IS used to rolling along easily and needed a wake up call. This is it. One monster distraction (Rapinoe) is leaving and I really don't give a sh*t if people agree or not. Her game was terrible, she wasn't clutch and HER political views were grossly distracting.

I'm looking forward to a new(ish) Team USA!

Oh, and fire the coach.

It's nothing to do with that. That US Women's team don't play voodoo football. It's mainly down to financing, infrastructure and an increasing number of teams going full professional with all the bells and whistles.

While women's football has been of a high standard in the UK for a while, the likes of Doncaster and Arsenal trailblazing - there was absolutely no money in it, and players would only train one evening a week. England didn't have a fully professional women's football league until 2018/19. The USA has always in my living memory had a very strong Collegiate soccer (women's) network, and IIRC your first women's league went pro in 1994 or 1995.

U.S. men's college football programs and their television contracts are the single biggest driver of women's sports globally.

20% of the women competing at this year's World Cup have been trained in U.S. collegiate soccer programs made possible by college football.

It's especially noticeable with the Olympics. In 2020 Stanford University alone sent 57 athletes to Tokyo. 40% of them played for other countries.

U.S. Men's College Football subsidizes the Olympic training programs of nearly every nation in the world as the world often finds it cheaper and more effective to simply enroll their athletes in our colleges than to develop their own programs for every sport.
