I went to the National (my first time going) with over 2k in cash and a bunch of cards to use as trade fodder. I did not buy a single card! Seems like there are much better deals on Ebay for what I am looking to buy.

I wanted to get some feedback on my thoughts about the show and the hobby in general.

The dealers did not seem to be at the show to move product at Ebay comps. This seemed a little strange to me, because I assumed no Ebay fees and cash is a better outcome then selling online.

It appeared to me that most dealers were there to buy inventory at 70-80% of comps to flip and make a profit.

I was very surprised that most of the attendees seem to be at the show to make money on cards with a smaller amount of collectors looking for specific items. There were also plenty of people going through the dollar bins to find treasure (I was not one of them).

A lot of people were looking to trade high end plus cash to dealers for even more higher end cards.

I only collect baseball cards, and I did not realize most people are more into football and basketball. I do not understand the crazy prices on modern football and basketball of guys that will not make the HOF or have a lasting legacy.

I thought I might have more success at trade night, but trade night was really just attendees that are dealers looking to buy from others way below comps and sell cards above comps. I was hoping to find other Ohtani collectors looking to trade with other Ohtani collectors...but no such luck.

And lastly...everyone seems obsessed with graded cards...especially PSA10. I assume its because its easier to sell or trade a graded card than to deal with raw cards. But it seemed to me that like 90%+ of modern cards that were worth of $25 or so were graded. And most graded cards seemed to be PSA10. I was looking for raw and PSA9 cards to buy.

Maybe I should look to people on here to try to trade/buy Ohtani cards with!

sean, that was why i suggested a while ago that you start to slow-boat grade your Ohtanis

as far as the show goes.... did you talk to people and possible make new friends?

the best thing about the show is the friends you make there year after year

that 2018 Heritage i mentioned earlier? i didnt even see it, a friend of mine did and asked me if i wanted it

I don't even have it in hand yet but it did ship. I actually do not own a paper black despite owning a few of the refractor counterpart.

I like card shows, but I just don't have the personality (or at least I don't enjoy) haggling and dealing with people trying to rip me off. The past 2-3 seasons have really turned me off to new Ohtani "collectors" and dealers - most of them looking for a flip. You see it all the time where someone is like "I just acquired my Ohtani grail, I've searched for this card for 3 years, imo his his best card. FS -$10K." . I negotiate for work, so I'm probably just pre-jaded. To be fair, it's probably a better experience collecting a dude that isn't the face of his hobby.

As for graded, that's just the way it is now. If your plan is to shift the complex of your collection, you're going to have to grade or take PSA 7-8 pricing for your cards. I am thankful I have no more Ohtani cards left to grade, tbh.

This is a great write up. I haven’t been and was looking at going to Chicago next year.

VDM used to have four of them before he dumped them, and then started dumping on Sho .

They were yucky BGS slabs with white corners though 🥲

Gotcha, the action 17 is on my radar also! That’s actually the card I was searching for when I came across the paper black 9 recently.

And yea, True has at least one of everything! lol

I do not really sell my cards, I just buy and collect. And I am not an active trader. With that being said at some point I will grade my Ohtani cards...mainly to use to trade up in the future if I ever go to another big show/National.

I did talk to a bunch of people and dealers at the show. Did not happen to meet any other Ohtani collectors. I also went to the trade night and did not meet any other Ohtani collectors. Like I said before, it seemed most people were there to buy and flip to make money.

The good news is I have a much better idea on how the how the hobby works at these shows. High end and PSA10 rule.

Now I just have to figure out what I am going to aim for in the off season (besides finding Ohtani cards that I think are under valued and will be more appreciated in the future).

I think I would like to pursue raw or PSA9 #700 SSP and the two US1 SSP cards and the Bowman chrome #1 image variation.

I also would like to at some point pick up a RC auto. Based on Trueblue's auto list it would probably have to be a Topps chrome base or finest.

The good news is I can be patient and wait for a good deal.

You’re going to be hard pressed to trade up a bunch of $100ish cards into a $1k+ card. There are not a lot of dealers that are going to make that trade.
