Congrats on the awesome pull and Good luck on the grade

Hate to burst your bubble, but that card actually does have "the dimple", just not an overtly bad one. It's also OC a bit from left to right.

Still think it could get a 9 though, but I wouldn't pay $300 to Super Express it (but that's just me...).

It's a very high percentage, I owned a LOT of these (I even had 10% of the pop of PSA 10s at one point) and it's on almost all of them. Sometimes it's bad, sometimes it's subtle, sometimes it shows up as just a dark spot. It's pretty rare to find one with no trace at all. Print lines were also a big problem with these, seemed to be more on the left side of the card than the right.

Just backing this up, it does have the dimple, very cool pull, but I wouldn't spend $300 on grading it.

Awesome hit! Unfortunately, as a couple others have noticed, it does indeed have the dimple. Still awesome luck tho! Congrats!

I’m a big fan of the Holo and agree they are undervalued on a relative basis. However, I just don’t foresee a scenario where they ever catch up to the Prizm. Frankly, I think Optic has now taken a back seat to Select as the #3 mainstream brand, giving Select Silvers (Field and Premier Levels) more pricing upside long term (lower pop - at least historically before retail launch, higher pack price point, more attractive photography)

Would be curious to hear others’ opinions on the matter. To be clear, I’m a fan of all three brands and invested heavily across each of them as part of my Mahomes PC

I think select has the best photography of the 3, and personally, those are my fave. Prizm is my least favorite of the 3, so I don’t understand why it’s so much more sought after than the optic holo.

On a related note, does anyone know the print run of the select field level base vs silvers? And why do the select base cards in ‘17 have “prizm” on the back?

The Optic Holo is a favorite of mine - to me just a way cooler designed card than Prizm or Select, even with 2017 Optic being the worst design of the Optic years. Still crazy to me how valuable Prizm is when every rookie is a silver and how Mahomes wasn't included in the concourse (true base) of Select 2017. Those reasons plus the Optic Holo is a legitimate SP rookie refractor puts it up at the top of the Mahomes chrome rookies. No idea about value long term value comparison, though. I tend to collect what I like and it typically works out anyway.

That just puts the Select #103 as his true Select base rookie.

For precedence on this, think back to 1998ish Leaf Rookies and Stars, which had a veteran base tier, and an SP'd rookie tier. Just like the Select, it fits the Beckett definition of the 'Rookie Card'.

Yeah for sure. And I'm not trying to hate on Select - it's also an awesome product, but it's just weird things happened with Mahomes 2017 Prizm and Select.

Prizm: dimple, all silvers (any other year have this?)
Select: no concourse (why? other rookies are in the concourse set), premiere level base mislabeled as "prizms"

Optic is just the cleanest of them all - no printing errors, standard SP refractor rookie card.

But no Rookie Card logo means it's not a true rookie! "Rated Rookie" doesn't count.

Haha... not really. But we collectors are funny about this kind of stuff.

Glad I have you guys to discuss this because my wife just tunes me out.

You just hit on what I see as the biggest obstacle to optic’s pricing upside long-term. Football collectors are generally willing to accept rated rookies as “true rookies“, though I don’t believe that holds true for baseball and basketball collectors. This significantly narrows the global universe of potential buyers that want to own THE flagship rookie for marquee football players. Maybe this perception will change over time, though I doubt it

I've never once heard/seen that sentiment in the basketball forums which has a much larger global market than football.

It's all about the checklist to me. I don't know about the entire history of Rated Rookies in baseball, but the Rated Rookies are always included in the base checklist since their inclusion in Donruss/Optic with Panini. I think the Select checklist is way more confusing with the 3 tiers and Mahomes not being in the base tier for 2017 despite Watson and Trubisky being included. Prizm is also confusing for 2017 not from a checklist standpoint but just from not having a non-refractor base.

Now if we're talking about "The Rookies" insert, that's a different story.

I remember way back in this thread people were saying select field level prizms would overtake prizm silvers and said it would never happen (and may have accused them of pumping).

I was wrong.

I guess I'll take that as confirmation that this sale on Ebay was legit?

I am glad for the owners of Select Field Silver

Thank God I do not own one and did not talk about its scarcity and give a price target on it like I did on XRC. Otherwise, I would have been blamed for the run up in Select Field Silver prices too

Agree with this. Optic RR is just as good as a RC logo on another card to me.
