It's much easier with BGS because their database gives you a "born on" date for grading. You can then look up serial numbers nearby to see what else was in that batch. PSA does not.

In September, I exposed eBay seller bristolcollectibles for selling trimmed and altered cards, all certified by PSA. The thread got some initial attention but was moved to the member feedback section which killed any traction it had:
https://www.blowoutforums.com/showthread.php?t=1241069

Well bristolcollectibles now has a new eBay ID, selling under the name isellurcards. I assume this is to emphasize the consignment end of their business, which adds a layer of plausible deniability if they are ever found to be selling counterfeit or altered cards (Hi tntnorthnj, hope you are reading and all is well!).

Anyway, on November 28, isellurcards sold a 2000 Fleer Showcase Tom Brady Rookie Showcase First PSA 9 card for $3,989.66. It was serial numbered 218/250.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/2000-Fleer-...-/362490537589

However, the Brady Showcase First with serial number 218/250 was previously sold on eBay on August 19 for $1,026. The kicker? It was at that time a PSA 5 !!
https://www.worthpoint.com/worthoped...tom-1949456544

This begs the question: How does a card jump not 1, but a full 4 grades?! Below are photos showing matching serial numbers:

By the way, this card is currently being sold by seller ereeves1011eric, who likely bought the Brady trying to flip it and has no idea of the card's questionable history.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/2000-Fleer-.../292887805336?

I can't prove the card was altered or trimmed, but there is strong evidence to suggest something shady went down here, especially given the past history of this seller.

1/1/19 Adding updated information to the thread's first post:

So I recently bought a 94 Finest Griffey Refractor psa 6. I cracked, wiped, came back a 10. Not everyone is a scammer at some point you have to realize not everyone is a pro grader. The card I bought was covered in what looked like Ice Cream and chicken grease. Some water and a microfiber and surface was perfect. Not saying that’s the case with the Brady but it’s very easy to jump multiple grades without altering a card.

Very easy to jump multiple grades without altering? I'm gonna go with no. Ok, it worked once for you. How many other cards have you resubmitted and jumped 4 grades? I'll wait...

4 points that’s the only one I’ve had. 2-3 points on surface to get to gem all the time. If you can’t understand how it’s possibke I can’t help you. How much do you grade? I send in about 30 higher end cards every month. A mistake such as something stuck to an edge or fingerprints can drop you 2 points easy. That’s in general not the Brady

it's very easy to jump 2,3, even 4 grades by wiping the surface..... some cards tend to cake

however, the evidence for this "hobbyist" is overwhelming .... this thread is much more than wiping down one card....... where there is smoke, this is fire...... one or two examples, probably wiped down........... many examples over years with size evidence changes based on checkpoints.. then the smoking gun...... it would be quite the project to protect this individual

How do you make dinged corners and chipped edges disappear though?

Yeah, but did you take out an ad asking for someone who could cut something to 1/64th of an inch in order to do some "restoration" work. Sure, not everyone is scamming, but this is a pretty clear example.

Probstein and PWCC are listing some higher end Bradys on eBay today. Watch out for this 2000 Brady UD Ionix Black Label (#1808/2000) that I mentioned in post 132:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2000-UD-Ion...K7U:rk:57:pf:0

For reference, my original post shows the Worthpoint sale listing of this same card as a BGS 9 (subgrades 9.5/9.0/8.5/9.0), and as part of a 4-card group that sold for $1,300.00 in June 2017.

That's great, but these bradys are two different cards.

Got a new toy from Amazon - A Vernier Digital Caliper capable of measurements to 1/128 inch.

I have a working theory that card production tolerances are actually very tight for any given product, and that Beckett and PSA allow size tolerances for grading because of differences between products and not within a given product. I collect 2000 Brady’s, so for example 2000 Fleer Tradition cards are nearly identical in size, but differ somewhat in size from 2000 Upper Deck or 2000 Donruss. Why does this matter? If it is true, we can determine the true raw size of a certain product like 2000 Fleer Tradition, and further determine when a Fleer Tradition card has been trimmed.

It will take a while to properly test this hypothesis, but to kick it off I bought a box of 2000 Fleer Tradition for fun (because Fleer is the only affordable year 2000 box). Casual observation shows a very tight tolerance for the 300+ cards for the box:

Laying horizontal

Laying vertical

Opened caliper by 1/128 so card moves freely. Almost imperceptible gap between card edge and right side caliper

Sorry, Tapatalk messed up that last photo. Here it is with the caliper opened by 1/128 inch so that the card moves freely:

Here’s my 2000 Ionix BGS 10 I believe to be untouched:

And here is that tainted Black Label:

Hmmm ... 4/128 inch difference, that would be like trimming 1/64 off from each side.

Boy am I going to have fun with this thing!

Sorry Superdan, I did not mean to hijack this thread. Since it morphed from a card trimming/altering topic to a specific individual, I’ll start a new thread to carry out my experiments.

Careful what we wish for. They start measuring to 128th of an inch we will have a whole new thread complaining about how many cards are getting rejected for being undersized.

I 100% guarantee you PSA,SGC or BGS does not go thru that much time or effort when grading a card.

They would get nothing done if they did.

They rush thru them and move on to the next card.

Thats why they miss so many things.

So basically grading is a joke. If I can spend a few hundred on a trimmer and add a few thousand to all my high end cards, how many people are currently doing this. I'm sure they are in a panic that someone figured it out. How many numbered cards on Facebook, Instagram, etc. are currently being taken down so that there isn't a record of their current grade?

No need to apologize, this fits perfectly with this thread. Great post BC!

Have you thought of contacting BGS about that Brady? They might want to buy it back from you just to get their mistake out of the hobby.

For one so knowledgeable about BGS, you don't know them at all......

Looking for Andre Dawson Serial numbered cards that are his jersey number - either #8 or #10. So looking for cards like 8/8 or 08/99 or 10/250.

Hey look, a real life card doctor shows himself. Joey actually runs a little card dr business where people send him cards and he "fixes" them for a fee. dont believe me, ask him. He has admitted to removing scratches on refractors before. He will deny deny deny and say he is not altering when he removes scratches, but he is. I agree, you can wipe off fingerprints, but when a portion of the actual gloss is removed to "fix" scratches, you have altered cards.

The gall coming onto a thread about card doctors.

Joey takes orders to "fix" refractor surfaces.
