Cant wait to see how Fanatics handle this. I hope they put more product on the blockchain.

Yeah, the MLB is making more money while Fanatics does the work. Nobody at MLB headquarters is going to care if Fanatics goes with Upper Deck TMs to help fill their set quotas.

Awesome news. It's weird to have two of the biggest names of all time in basketball not have a single NBA-licensed autograph produced in years. MJ isn't getting any younger, maybe it's time to cash out. UD has also been quite stale in their designs for some time as well. I don't care what anyone says, Panini brought a fresh energy and cool designs to the market for the brief time they had the NHL license. We'll see what Fanatics will do, if in fact this news is true.

It'll be interesting if they buy out Upper Deck.... that would be huge news.

Would love to see UD Reflections make a comeback in both baseball and basketball cards

The upper deck COMPANY was sued. And lost. And handed major restrictions.

It doesn’t matter who owns the company if the company is barred from having players in team colors or even a baseball uniform.

Interesting from a legal standpoint if that's the case. Fanatics with MLB owners and MLBPA having equity in the company can't use their own logos/team names.

Easy- buy Upper Deck, own the IP / assets, dissolve the original entity. It’s UD brand design owned by Fanatics.

Barred based on a settlement when Upper Deck didn’t have the rights. Fanatics would certainly be able to produce cards with logos using the Upper Deck trademarks if they had the rights to do so.

Half the people on this thread work for UD and are looking for a payout

Default Why isn't anyone talking about the Fanatics deal and how it affects baseball cards?

Is this just something that you aren't supposed to talk about here? IF so, mods, no harm no foul if this is deleted.

I am trying to gather as much info as I can, but it appears that wherever I go, it's slanted one way or the other.

Maybe it's too early to tell.

My takeaways is that Fanatics will have a corner on all (major) Sports card production with the licensing locked down. Where does that leave Topps and Panini? How does that affect distributors/retail outlets like BlowOut?

Topps didn't get sold and didn't get their blank check, that deal crashed and burned because of this.

Will EVEYRONE just be able to buy straight from Fanatics and they will cut out the middleman? No more Topps? Or do they wait until Topps is about to go under and buy them for pennies on the dollar?

I am torn on all of this- will it be good or bad for the hobby, or are we about to see a paradigm shift on how we collect/buy/grade/trade cards.

Just posted to hear your opinions- it's probably too early to tell.

Huh? There was a massive thread about it the day the news broke and it’s been brought up in a lot of other threads. It’s been heavily discussed here.

And I think the reason you don't see it discussed more now is because everyone is in a holding pattern waiting for more information - there was a trickle of a few additional details about a week after, and that's been it, nothing really since then. So other than going "Hey, that Fanatics, huh?" there's nothing more to say that hasn't been said right now.

Topps is currently giving us a taste of how it will be with the 2021 Finest Flashbacks and Ginter X release. Normally that's a $99 or less boxes. They were sold at $175 and $199. FF sold out and I expect Ginter X to sell out today as well. These prices will be either right or more than likely, a lot more with Fanatics. However, Fanatics will probably print it like 1990 Pro Set. I expect a "How Fanatics killed the sports card hobby" in a decade.

Its not like anyone really knows anything about what will happen anyways. The massive thread is just hand wringing and dreaming up scenarios and NFT talk.

Good call. I was feeling like I missed something, but apparently not.

No. 1991 pro set. The 1990 issue was considered “rarer”. Lolz.
