To those on here that know the Ohtani market in Japan...I was wondering if the sellers from Japan that sell on Ebay know that their prices are way above Ebay comps? Are they really trying to sell Ohtani cards to people in the US?

Lot of arbitrage sellers that are listing cards from Japan-only platforms and putting them on eBay. Basically flippers.

And some are just overpriced sellers. Same as the US.

The definitely know what they are doing and trying to sell to unsuspecting buyers. They are counting on the fact that people don’t know how to use the auction services over here which is obviously much cheaper.

There are a lot of wolves out there right now with listings hoping to lure a little lamb to slay.

The pricing between Sho's two Bowman cards seem to fluctuate all of the time, but I think the pitching version is selling for a bit more than the batting one right now. You think that's the reason for it? Personally, I'd prefer to have the batting one because I think he will be better known for his ability as a hitter than pitcher.

1) Pitching CRA-SO was released first in Bowman proper - it's the first Bowman auto by definition.
2) Batting BCRA-SO was predominantly redemption, making it very easy to gem.
3) BCRA-SO was signed after TJS, hence a mechanical signature.

Jeez, I hadn't realized how expensive Ohtani rookie autos had gotten. Even my 2nd tier Finest PSA 9 is a $4k card now. So glad I picked it up in 2022 for a fraction of that price.

Has it been confirmed that his autograph changed as a result of TJS? I kind of just assumed he got tired of putting such an intricate signature to pen over and over again.

Not sure how you confirm that, but the redemptions were not fulfilled till very late in the year. Pretty sure Sho was not doing two-way duty and signing autos.

I have noticed low end and medium end RC edging up in price again. Is this just a transient spike in demand due to probably 50/50? The experts on here said prices in the low end base card category would not go up due to such a large supply.

Anyone with a crystal ball wanting to take a guess at how they see the market for this year and the off season?

I am trying to figure out if I should wait on buying some SSP flagship cards or numbered cards now or wait until the off season.

I don't think anyone said that low-end base would not go up. It is however consensus that it would likely not go up the same rate as high-end, or have the same price consistency - due to plentiful supply.

Trueblue-you have been super consistent with your messaging on what to buy since 2021 when I started frequenting the Ohtani thread. So I take notes when you say something...as it is usually spot on!

As always, I am just trying to understand the market. Are prices going up due to a transient spike in demand due to potential 50/50. Or is something else happening. I am trying to figure out what is priced in Ohtani cards right now (50/50 and MVP) and what could happen if expectations are met, not met or exceeded.

I guess I am also trying to understand why some Ohtani RC (low and mid end) peaked in 2021 during his first MVP season. I don't get it. Since 2021 Ohtani has put up a 2nd place MVP, another MVP and will likely win a 3rd MVP this year. Will we see another peak in the near future or will his cards stay at these price levels for awhile. It makes me wonder...if in a few years Ohtani's performance comes down will his cards take a nosedive?

How is the high end RC and auto RC market doing? Are prices at an all time high...steady...or rising?

i think there will always be good demand for his MLB Rookie Cards in PSA 10 form, regardless of production numbers

High-end is flying up right now. Probably 15%+ higher at minimum when baseball cards in general are trending negative. Entry level rookie autos (entry level high-end) have nearly doubled in some cases - like the Finest FASO example Qubits brought up.

Nobody here has a crystal ball, but I would say that there is still a huge wave to ride in the potential sequence of 1) 50/50, 2) Deep playoff run, 3) Spring training two-way hype and laughable MVP odds, and of course 4) A fast start to 2025.

If all that happens (as planned), there's no time for Sho demand to fall. The one thing you cannot control is discretionary spending $s, which especially impacts low-end. Economy is half the equation.

Mr Mayor,

"Economy" and the stuff you are hoarding do not equate

2021 peak pricing happened because a lot of extra money landed in people's pockets from government stimulus. So a lot of extra cash came into the collectibles world and drove up card values. All of that extra money are long gone. Basing values on 2021 is probably going to lead to headaches. You may want to erase from your memory 2021 values, even if you bought in then.
