My wife will not let any of my boys play Football. I get it.

However I’m already sick of how stoopid team sports has become. The necessity to have your kid in sports 10 months out of the year rotating between travel, rec and school teams just to keep them on par with everyone else is bonkers.

Sports is not life, it’s not even that critical to development. The value is so dramatically overstated it’s ridiculous. I’m going to try and get my youngest into martial arts instead. More flexibility with the schedule, more of a lifelong pursuit and discipline. I went my kids to have a life outside of soccer but as it is, every weekend is already booked up with games from August until the end of October.

And no, I'm still not coaching.

The ones that really get me are the dad's that sucked at sports when we were kids and now they have their son's playing baseball year round. I was talking to 1 the other day, he has his 8 year old playing rec, summer rec, on 3 different travel teams, and taking private lessons. Watching the kid during rec, he isn't very good. His dad was saying how much money they spend a month on baseball, and it shocked me. The kid has practice 7 days a week, is always traveling for games. He is 8, he isn't in the top 25 of kids in the rec league.

We have others that thing their son is great. This spring a 13 year old played in the Ozone league, which is meant for 11-12 but we allow 13's to play to get the numbers up. His son looked great out there against lower competition. He even said to me, "I don't get how he didn't make the school team, just look at him." This summer, he is playing in the summer league I run for 13-17's, and he is lost. Most of the kids are 15U and his son is getting beat down. When he pitches, kids tee off on him, when he bats, he can't catch up to fastballs and runs from curves.

Two years ago, we had a kid suffer a spinal injury during a game, luckily he is fine, but when he was laying on the field it took me back to high school when I suffered 1 during a practice. The feeling of not being able to move when you try is scary. The sensation of feeling coming back from your toes up to your shoulder is strange. The only good part was, I couldn't feel all the fire arts biting me for a while.

If I had kids, I'm not sure I would let them play tackle football until at least middle school. Even with all the advancements in helmets, young kids don't need to be taking hits.
I don't think I'd want him playing either, but since he's never asked to play, I've never had to go down that road. One of his best friends plays football.

When we lived in my wife's house, our neighbors had 3 kids. 2 of the boys played travel baseball and the one girl did competitive swimming. They spent thousands of dollars and were never home. So far, neither of the boys went on to college baseball or were drafted and the girl almost killed her Mom and said the Dad stabbed her when the police showed up. Not sure it was money or family time well spent.

I have had lower back problems since high school.
It's becoming more regular lately.

This is true. I have taught her everything I know about server administration and she's heard all of my rants and what happened with government and employee issues.

The sanctification of sport is another red flag for where we are headed. It makes me sound old to say that, but there is just so little unique value in it, yet it has become the epitome of accomplishment for so many kids, teens and young adults.

I want my kids to have a life outside of sports. Heck I want to continue to have a life outside of sports. It has become almost impossible to balance that anymore. My son wants to start hunting more but his entire fall is soccer on Saturdays and practice 3 other nights. Add in drum lessons one night a week, church on Sundays and you’re left with one free evening.

What is going to happen to these kids who have defined their lives around sport for 10+ years when they are 24 and have developed no other interests?

Hey Bnut, you'll get a chuckle out of at least one response in this thread.

They sit around and talk about how good they were and how it's the coach's fault they aren't playing in the pros.

Trip to the HQ for those packages got pushed off until tomorrow morning as we couldn't get a van.

I have to fill-in for my boss on the weekly meeting again this week as her Mom is coming home from the hospital today. Hopefully the PM doesn't want to discuss the training issue as my boss and I plan on discussing an appropriate response tomorrow.
