I've now watched 2 Mavs games this year an have been totally disappointed.

I get that they played a tough opponent tonight, but they rolled over and died at the end there. That's not okay for a team of experienced guys

I definitely feel bad for Luka. He has to know this team is going nowhere as constructed. That probably feeds into his fishing for calls. I wonder how long he gives Cuban to do something before he asks out, if he already hasn't talked to him about it.

I was super confused why they just kinda dicked around until the last second to shoot. when you're down, don't you just shoot right away so you can foul and get another shot at it?

I don't know what you're talking about but I had the sound off. The Luka / KP hot potato was weird, seemed like it took forever for Luka to just dribble out and reset to draw the double. Ended up with a decent look but wasted a good portion of whatever time they had getting to that point though

Inbounded the ball with 20 seconds left and had the shot off with 15 seconds left. They did exactly what you said they should have. Long rebound with 12 seconds. Took some time to get past the defense and find the open man. Find on the video where they had a chance to take an acceptable shot before that.

The first shot was fine. Got a good matchup with Claxton, took the step back at left hash where Luka wants it. The issue we had was with the second shot taking all 14 seconds (not 12, as shown below)

Claxton gets himself way out of position watching the shot, so when KP gets it in the corner he panics and runs to the ball. When KP passes to Luka he’s wide open, and even has an extra second due to Powell’s screen. Luka completely screwed this up by driving middle, probably just and instinctual thing to attack when you have a defender out of position and sprinting towards you.




As soon as he gets in the paint, he realizes “oh sh*t we need 3” and kicks to KP, but Brown knows the situation and didn’t help middle so KP has no shot.



KP at least tried to immediately dump back to Luka who for some reason tries to do a dribble hand off back to KP… then ends up getting it back, but this whole awkward exchange was what we were commenting on.




Luka could have probably crossed left here with 5 seconds left and taken the same shot as earlier, but the pass to THJ and the shot they got were fine and probably the correct basketball play

Here's the bright side...

Things can change quick.

A year ago the Bucks tried to cash in to get Giannis some help and wound up with Pelicans cast off Jrue Holiday. A lot of people, including myself, thought it was too little and the Giannis was going to force his way out at the end of the season.

Low and behold, Jrue worked and Giannis improved his game and won a title.

Just a few tweaks to the roster and to Luka and who knows.

Ok, thanks. Broken play after a long rebound? It’s going to happen. Not going to get too upset over them taking a few more seconds to find a great shot. Which is exactly what they did.

And NBA.com has the Porzingis rebound at 12.6 seconds on the official play by play. So I’ll go with that.

Doncic is a great player, but those thinking he's going to be Jordan/Kobe/Lebron/Curry/Giannis - ain't happening. It has nothing to do with his skill; he's otherworldly. But. He's a 22 y/o in a 35 y/o body. That's the reality. This is as athletic as he'll ever be. Invest accordingly.
