A grown man asking to play catch is lame, who asks for that?

If you're going to give it back, get a signed bat and ball and go home!

My understanding is that he received three signed ball and three signed bats in addition to the game of catch. However, I will never understand the idea of catching what is essentially a lottery ticket and giving it to a multi-million dollar athlete. In this case, the guy has two kids, and I would think selling the ball would be a good start on college funds or other life changing items.

Agreed. I'm not here to yuck anyone's yum so if he wants to play catch good for him. We all have different interests and hobbies so I'm not going to judge him.

Now, if you ask me personally a signed bat, ball, and playing catch all don't do anything for me. Show me some cash! If you want the ball you'll have to pay me. Trout is on an over $400 mil contract so keep your signed bat, ball, and playing catch and write me a check and make it out to SidVish if you want the ball!

Really hoped he wouldn't hit 400 until opening day next season and then ride that momentum and start off on a tear next year. This year he stayed mostly healthy and had a lot of at bats but I cannot say this was a good season by any means costing his team 37 million to produce a WAR of 1 while not even playing the field and leading the team in strikeouts while only having the 6th most at bats, brutal.

I completely agree.

You can give the player the first crack at buying the ball, but after that, it's on the open market.

It’s another man’s achievement and milestone, not yours. Trying to negotiate someone’s keepsake for max leverage is a poor person’s mentality.

Giving away a 6 figure payday is a poor persons mentality

There is no game, and therefore no achievement, without the fans. It's not that much work to scribble your name on a ball or play catch with a fan to get the ball you hit back.

My guess is they are saying poor people are poor because they make bad decisions.

i never thought of 400 as a milestone. especially in modern times. I thought everyone considered 500 the big number with 600 being very exclusive.

I mean when you think about it it's still a pretty great feat. Trout was the 59th player to hit 400 but I believe like half of that have reached 500.

*quickly googles*
28 have 500 and 9 have 600

I would think number 500 would be a nice 6 figure payday, not 400. I don't remember hearing or seeing a '400th homerun ball' being sold for a crazy price. But in today's sports memorabilia world, who knows....

it is a nice feat, but definitely not a milestone.

its the equivalent of what, getting 2400 hits.

impressive, but definitely not an all time type number. i was sort of surprised folks were counting down to it.

Trout’s achievement.

Trout’s milestone.

The fan’s baseball.

That’s how it works. Once it goes into the stands, Trout has no right to the ball. If he wants it, it immediately becomes a negotiation. No way I would give it up for a game of catch.

Per the article linked last page, the fan got 3 signed bats too… but right, I would have taken cash.

“Alberto, his wife and two children met Trout and exchanged the ball for three signed bats. He also got a unique experience -- a game of catch. After chatting in the Angels' dugout, Alberto and Trout headed toward the third-base line to toss a ball around. Alberto brought the glove that he didn't need to snag the homer while the three-time MVP used his bare hands.”

The dad who faced the wrath of Phillies Karen two weeks ago made out waaaaaaay better. His family got a meet and greet, swag from both teams, a camper, AND World Series tickets! All of that and a lifetime worth of goodwill. The catch thing is kinda oddball.

Let's be honest -- Trout got lucky with the naivete of the fan who caught the ball.

The fan should have just held onto the ball and sold it at auction.

I mean, it's possible the fan would not have benefitted from tens of thousands more in his bank account, but I highly doubt that -- he seemed fairly young, working class, with a family, and sitting in the nosebleeds.

20 years go it was a huge deal of course.
Nowadays, with 160 lb infielders hitting 30+ HR a year, it’s not a big deal.

The biggest issue is Trout “should” have had 400 a while back. He was on pace to be staring at 500 not limping into 400.

I think at this point we have to wonder the same about Acuna Jr. Pre injury he was on a fast track for 400, now he’ll be lucky to get 350 with his injuries and a body that will break down faster post age 30.

Shame.

the last players for whom i remember 400 being a semi big deal were Murray, Winfield and Dawson. still nothing compared to 500. that was 30-35 years ago.

by the mid-late 90's, home runs were flying out of the parks an the older HR milestones were being downgraded pretty quickly.

Laser beam! Dead center, right down broadway. I hope he hits as many as he can while healthy. 25 would be a nice round number for the season.

It would be great if he could just stay healthy for a few more seasons and try to get to 500. I'm rooting for him.
