Default 1933 Goudey Babe Ruth #181

I am 99% sure this is a fake but what type of stock/cardboard did they use back then? This is a very hard cardboard.

I am 100% sure it is fake. That "crackling" is a dead giveaway. The stock should be a creamy off white/white color....and it should be on stock that is card stock thickness, not thicker (or too hard).

Thanks for the response. It seems to be slightly harder than a regular card (used a card from the 80's for comparison) but not as hard as a chrome card. When I bought it, it was sold as not real but I thought I would give it a shot.

Thanks for the info on the crackling.

What would PSA do if I were to send it in, slab it as a reprint or send it back?

not to sound odd but give it a whiff! real, vintage, beat up cards smell old haha.

PSA would just send it back as "questionable authenticity" which really means FAKE

Yes and then someone would try to sell it as a possible real card because of the misleading question mark. PSA needs to do away with that for fake cards....They need to put "counterfeit" on the flips...

agreed, i don't know why they don't commit to their assessment.

My guess is most likely they do it the way they do it for legal reasons.

If someone is selling something as "not real" - I'd take their word for it.

If you're in the market for some iconic vintage cards, my advice would be to buy non-name exemplars from specific sets so you know what a real one "feels" like.

You can pick up a nobody 1933/1934 Goudey for $10. Simple familiarity would have save whatever you paid for the Ruth.

How many accounts do you need exactly?

No, absolutely not. I own a complete 1933 Goudey set and I would never do this. For the value of a Ruth or Gehrig, you need to buy graded. If it is not graded, figure it is most likely fake or at best altered. If you want to gamble, go to Vegas, your odds are better.
