Default 1981 Popy Kajiwara packs were busted open, three of them!

I am attempting to complete this small 17 card set and paid some money to buy three figures. There are 8 cards per unopened pack. Here is the checklist for the set and what I received.

Labeled "A"
Abdullah the Butcher (3)
Andre the Giant (3)
Antonio Inoki (2)
Mil Mascaras (2)
Tiger Mask (2)

Labeled "B"
Abdullah the Butcher (0)
Andre the Giant (0)
Antonio Inoki (1)
Mil Mascaras (0)
Tiger Mask (1)

Unlabeled-
Giant Baba (3)
Dory Funk Jr (2)
Stan Hansen (2)
Bob Backlund (1)
Harley Race (1)
Terry Funk (1)
Hulk Hogan (0)

I struck out on getting the 1981 Hogan!

Ughhh!!!!!!!

The Race and Hogan I needed for my set. A lot of the cards are very nice, but not the Race.....

Awesome! This gives us a better idea of how which cards are hard to find and pretty much solidifies this at 17-cards. Thanks since I know this wasn't cheap!

Are you sure the Hogan is "unlabeled"? Have you seen the back of the Hogan?

It might be possible that there are 2 Hogan cards. Seems strange the set would have an odd number of cards.

All information that I have on the Hogan is that it is one card. There remains a very, very small possibility that there are two Hogans, but I would be shocked if there were two. I am willing to wager there is only one Hogan for sure. Perhaps it was just a bit of randomness, but it appears those cards that are labeled "B" seem to be a little tougher to locate. For the moment I appear to have one of the largest collections of these cards besides a possible wrestling figure collector who has no intentions of busting the seal to get to the cards. It will be fun to see how this set develops over the next year. I'd sure like to see more of these come to market. I love small sets with star power and the ability to find their way into PSA slabs. I can easily see this set having collectors going after it as the supply will always be a challenge.
As for the odd number of cards in the set, I tend to agree that 17 seems like an odd number for a trading card set. While it would seem like it would be 18 or 16 if just a trading card set, since the focus on this set appears to be the figures and not the cards it makes more sense to me.

Interesting note is that some of the packages have a rubberband around the cards from the factory while being sealed. This makes some of the cards susceptible to damage from the deteriorating rubberband inside with staining and pressure. The rubberband at this point in time holds no pressure around the cards but may have at one time. Staining would be the main issue now.

Thanks DPeck! I think this are great too!

Great looking cards! I hope you can complete the set! Will be tough competing with the figure collectors. Did you note which cards came with which figure? Would be nice to see if we can see a packaging sequence.

It is a rare treat with wrestling cards busting open packs that mean anything. I was hoping the lotto ticket, ie the Hogan card, was in there but it was not meant to be. My second most favorite card was the Andre the Giant coming over the ropes but did not get one of those either. My other preference would have been a nice Harley Race and did not get one of those. I still had a lot of fun giving it a try and will be willing to roll the dice again in the future. As sumo said, these are not cheap.

It does show how hard these Hogans will be to find and I'm not sure why they are seemingly short printed.

not sure if they would be short printed, just not enough information on them right now. I am sure that the figures are tied up in other collections so that may explain some of the shortage right now.

Have you been able to find these packs unopened without the figures, or are the ones you finding usually intact? I am just curious, I think the figures are pretty cool myself. Just being old and nostalgic, albeit it from Japan, where personally I haven't seen most of the old great matches. The reason I ask is I bet if you are finding them intact with Figures you must be paying quite a premium for them, having to fight off the toy collectors. Good luck with your set collection. Definitely cool.

The only way to have unopened packs is to buy the figure that is still MOC so yes you will be paying a premium. I'm willing to do it though as I simply love these cards.

Japanese collectors has probably hoarded the Hogan card for the last 3 decades, and the cards may be locked up in older collections. Other than a package getting opened and getting lucky to find the card, I kind of doubt any will surface. I can't recall seeing a single one ever listed on ebay.

It will be that much more of a challenge to find one and I certainly intend to locate one. I enjoy a good challenge.

I could be mistaken but I believe that you are the one with the complete signed set of PSA authenticated All Stars? That is one heck of an accomplishment. If you can complete that, you will eventually find your Hogan.

I know of a small signing coming up with Bobby Heenan and I am strongly considering getting my 82' All Stars signed, but unfortunately the raw copy I have has some centering issues.

The photography on this Popy set is amazing. Good luck with finding your Hogan.

The "A" card says:

The world's giant, Andre the Giant, made his debut 15 years ago as Monster Roussimoff. He was a large man at the time and is now a popular wrestler sought after by all nation's promoters. He doesn't have a title now, but is the world's #1 (wrestler) and has the highest fight money (earnings).

The "B" card says:

The largest wrestler in the world of pro wrestling. Born deep in the mountains of France, he was recruited by a promoter as a lumberjack and entered the world (of pro wrestling). He's a big and strong champion and is not challenged. Although he doesn't have a title yet, he is certainly strong.

If I post more front and backs can you translate? I really enjoyed reading about the cards. A big thank you to you! Awesome! A reason why I like to participate on the boards!
