Default Advice on building a Topps Clearly Authentic set

I haven't collected cards much since I was a kid in the late 90's, but I've been looking for a product that I liked and could have some fun chasing those cards.

I like the Clearly Authentic cards, and want to build the set in some shape or form. One of my favorite memories of card collecting was building the 96-97 SPx basketball base set as a kid. There were only 50 cards in the base set, but they came only one card per pack, which blew my mind back then. It took me a couple years to track down all the cards. As a 10 year old with no internet and a $20/month allowance it was quite the accomplishment!!

Anyways, Clearly Authentic reminds me of those cards, with only one coming per box, and I love the way they look. I've done several group breaks and bought a couple cards on eBay, but before I go too far I want to get some advice on the best way to go about it.

Option 1) Build the un-numbered base set (82 cards)

Option 2) Build the base set in blue variation numbered to 25

Option 3) Track down all 82 cards in the set in whatever color variation I like for that particular card ( base, green /99, red /50, blue /25)

Option 4) track down all 82 cards in any of the color variations (same as option 3 but with no base)

What do you guys think? Does building the set in several different color variations make it less of a set, or could it be kind of cool? I think some of the cards look better with different colors (an A's card looks great in green, not as great in red)

Would appreciate any input, and let me know if you have any cards that could help me!

Thanks

PS: Still not sure if I'm gonna go crazy and try to collect all of the rookie reprints. Would be nuts!!

Mix and match, would be cool.

I think you should build the set with base + all color variations

j/k

If it were me (and I might be doing this as well), build the base set and then add the variations of players you like. Once you get the variations of the people you like you can check your budget and decide to add anything else.

I think I'll be going for the blues /25.

I've actually been thinking of doing this too. Going with the unnumbered base though.

It's tempting! Wouldn't be too painful until you got to Judge, Benintendi, Ichiro, and Trout.

One thing that scares me about going after the blue /25 set is getting like 50 of them, then realizing there's a few of the cards I can't get for less than $500, but I'm already too far into it to build a set with variation of colors.

Thanks. Mixing and matching, with no base is kind of the way I'm leaning right now, but still tempted to go for blue /25

Good question! Would be brutal to have 100 or so of them all start to fade on you.

Anyone know how other Acetate products have held up?

In some ways the unnumbered base set is the best looking, but I'm kind of in it partly for the thrill of the chase, so not sure if just getting all the base would satisfy that for me.

I would do the base set and put it in plastic sheets. It would probably look good in sheets.

Man I'm totally OCD about everything matching and I would go for the base set. It would be very satisfying for me to see them all uniformly. But that's just me.

Do all players have a base autograph? I know when I was putting together my 2015 Bowman's Best set, I realized correa didn't have a base auto. It kind of bothered me to the point I stopped trying to collect it lol. I still have the ones I care about, but sold a lot of them

I would do the base set unless there is a color variation that you just really like the look of.

Waste of time and money.

Buy a set that some sucker put together in a few years for pennies on the dollar.

1) Don't

2) If you must, start it in 2018

Same for the reprints? Likely to drop after the froth has worn off?

For this type of card (slight "novelty" given it's acetate) what's the usual window for peak prices?

Some of those autos already looking faded would scare the slop out of me
