I think for people who want to understand why people didn’t like it as much and left disappointed, I’d recommend watching Red Letter Media’s review. They give pretty good insight into the reasons why they didn’t really like it and I agree with a good amount of their takes. Something I didn’t even realize is, I’m not even looking forward to Episode IX. What can they really do? What mysteries are left? Rian nuked every single mystery in this movie. All that’s left is for Rey and Kylo REN to fight each other. I mean, other than that, what are we left with?

That was a great review.

The resistance was so decimated in this episode, that I believe Episode IX will actually take place 10 - 15 years after the end of this one. That gives them the ability to do a few important things. Leah can die of old age. Rey and Kylo can get stronger in their respective Force paths; I see Luke Force ghost training her. It gives the First Order the ability to complete its control of the Galaxy after the fall of the Republic while allowing the resistance to rearm. I think this concept was setup by the kid at the end of the movie. It will give them time for him and others like him that spread the resistance story to grow up a little and join them in the fight.

If the resistance immediately rebuilds with tons of ships/fighters/people with Episode IX taking place right after the end of this one, count me out of future movies.

I just don't care about fan made theories. After reading all the fan made theories about who Snoke was, who Rey's parents were, why did Luke go into hiding, who Rey is exactly, why did Anakin's lightsaber call to her, who is Captain Phasma, and others, only to see almost all of them go nowhere in Episode VIII, I just don't know if I care anymore enough to get excited for this next one.

Truth be told, I was way more pumped for The Disaster Artist than any movie this winter, followed by I, Tonya.

I think what took me out of Episode VIII was how quickly the First Order was able to rebuild considering this movie takes place almost right after Episode VII. They just lost thousands of troops and personnel on Starkiller base, lost their most powerful weapon, and yet, they are stronger than ever with all of these ships. Where are they getting the resources considering up until a week ago (in terms of Episode VIII) the Republic was the center of the galaxy and was the most central force of power.

I think what would have made the most sense would have been for the First Order to be a small but powerful group who carried out sneak attacks and guerrilla type warfare led by Ben Solo. Luke could still be in hiding disgraced over losing Ben to the dark side. There is an unease in the Republic with system by system leaving to join the New Order out of fear or out of not liking how the Republic is being run. There is a story out there to tell that feels different from the original trilogy.

Honestly, it is starting to feel like there isn't a lot of material in this universe to make into a three part movie series.

I read this morning (but can't find it again) that the First Order was formed and financed primarily by General Hux's Father who was a prominent, wealthy Imperial. As the Empire was falling and after the Battle of Jakku, they escaped to the outer rim planets and secretly formed and equipped the First Order over the 30 years in between the Battle of Jakku and The Force Awakens. I believe this was in a book or comic book that came out.

Since the original Star Wars was based on the Third Reich, it seems like this Imperial group would mimic the supposed Third Reich members and riches that disappeared to South America before WWII ended.

According to the 2016 novel, Star Wars: Bloodline, the New Republic Senate has once again been divided into 2 factions with one wanting to decentralize Government (led by Leah) and the other who wants a strong, central Government. Many of the second faction, Centrists, were driven out and joined the First Order. They weakened Leah by revealing she was the daughter of Darth Vader which i why she and the Resistance have little support or credibility with the New Republic in The Force Awakens.

I totally hated this movie in the context that it was a Star Wars movie. To me, the last two Disney has done, this and Rogue One, are good action movies, but total crap when it comes to being in the Star Wars universe and the lore of the original movies.

1) Why is it that only the bad guys always have a vulnerability in their equipment? Especially when we find out in this one that the same arms dealer supplies both sides. And why don't the bad guys learn not to have obvious vulnerabilities after the 50+ years from Episode IV - Episode VIII? The dreadnaught was destroyed way too easily and the cannon had a vulnerability too? What is the rebels/resistance vulnerability. put a fat guy in the cockpit?

2) Last line was a good segue to this is getting old. Just like the black guy always dies in a horror movie and the red shirter always dies in Star Trek, the fat pilot always dying in Star Wars is getting old. If I'm not mistaken, Lucas did it once in 6 movies and Disney has now done it in all 3 movies they made.

3) You know Carrie Fisher is dead in real life and you should have changed your plans for her in Episode IX by killing her off in this one. Disney didn't even need to reshoot anything. So hokey that she didn't die in space. Nothing can survive being in space with no protection. Allowing her to live as if it was some kind of jedi thing with someone who has zero jedi training was dumb. Not to mention, cheating death is kind of a Sith, Dark Side of the Force, desire/power, so how could Leah do it? All they needed to do was show her dead, floating in space there. She really had no major role the rest of the movie other than chastising Poe and a fake reunion with her brother since he wasn't even really there. I have no idea how they are going to explain her absence in Episode IX now as they already came out and said they wouldn't CGI her.

4) Too many lose ends we will probably never know the full story on. Snope dying robs of us of knowing who was he. Was he a Sith Lord? Was he a Sith Inquisitor? Where was he during the days of the Empire and how did he survive the total destruction of it? The story of Rey's parents being simple junk traders better be a Dark Side lie. How the heck can someone who is so powerful with the force with zero training not be of some famous jedi lineage?

5) Would have loved for more Captain Phasma in the movie and now she's dead.

6) This triliogy is too much like Episode IV - VI. There is no originality. Episode VII - Rebels show up to battle bad guys and blow up bad guys planet version of the death star with the introduction of the force and a possible new jedi coming up. Episode VIII should have been titled First Order Strikes back. Rebels are on the run and getting their butts whipped. Even had a very Hoth-like battle scene at the end with AT-ATs. Let me guess at Episode IX. Luke comes back as a force ghost and trains Rey and she then leads the last remaining rebels to defeat the First Order on a final battle while she battles Kylo Ren.

7) They destroyed Poe's character and turned him into Han Solo II. In Episode VII we are introduced to Poe as a hero. The guy who is the resistance's best pilot and most trusted by Leah to handle the biggest mission ever; find Luke. Now in Episode VIII he is demoted in rank by Leah, a rogue pilot who doesn't follow orders and feels he can beat the First Order by himself, and he leads a mutiny in the middle of a battle. Welcome the new Han Solo. I want new character development, not the exact same characters as the original with new names. Rey feels the exact same as Luke as well. Comes from an outlier planet, has the force, becomes the jedi hero.

8) Who leads the resistance in Episode IX? We know Leah has to die or disappear. Luke is gone. Most of the Admirals and other leadership were killed in this battle. Who is going to lead the resistance now?

9) Not enough Chewbacca. He was basically pushed aside as if he wasn't an integral character to the Star Wars saga anymore and seemed like a background character that could die at anytime. Same with R2D2. Even annoying C3PO had more screen time than everyone's favorite droid.

I did love Yoda being in it. I also liked the fight scene with Rey, Kylo and the new Imperial guards. Could the Imperial Guards have been the remaining Knights of Ren? Disney better knock Han Solo out of the park, because as a die hard fan, I'm not sure I can support Star Wars anymore. I might just have to stick to the original 2 trilogies.
Actually the little critter pictured below survive in space in real life and they don't have the force. Or do they?

For what its worth I really enjoyed the movie, more so than the last one. I'm not a big Star Wars fan (meaning I don't follow it insanely close like others do) so I don't get too caught up in the minor details which to others are major details. Hell I can't even remember half of the characters names most of the time.

The door that Chewie breaks open to Luke's house was a piece of metal from his submerged x-wing. Meaning it was probably so messed up it wouldn't fly. He couldn't have left to help if he wanted to, further explaining the ending.

I went and watched this last night. Will be going again in a week because as others mentioned you can usually pick more up on the 2nd viewing. I am not a fan of Star Wars and havent seen the first 6 episodes but did see 7 so figured I would see where 8 went. So given that I probably have a different perspective than others who are fans of the franchise. As a casual viewer I am not necessarily bothered by the lack of background of some of the characters. However I do agree that for those that like the series Disney should have made a better effort when it came to that.

Here are some things I liked and didn't like about the movie:

- I felt the Porgs were overplayed. I really like the scene with Chewy. Also I was really hoping the one Porg was going to trip the light saber and zap the other one. But as the movie went on they just kept going back to them on the Falcon and it just got annoying to me.

- I agree with others that the Rose character was a little annoying but she didn't bother me as much as it may have bothered most people. I thought it was very selfish of her to knock Finn's craft out of the air and risk the rest of the Resistance. She had no idea Luke was going to appear to save the day.

- I actually did like the plot twist of the mutiny backfiring on Poe. Initially I thought it was going to be a straightforward plot of 'heroes finding the hacker who gets them on the ship and they disable it'. However I didn't like the entire casino sequence. Just felt like there was stuff in there that wasn't needed and I also felt like the plot could have gone better. It was odd to have this big buildup for them to find the codebreaker only to have security stop them and then they meet the other guy. Just wasn't thrilling or intense. Also it was pretty clear from the start that the codebreaker they found was going to thrown them under the bus, was just a matter of when it was going to happen.

- Agree with the others on Leia coming back from the dead after floating in space. Again just seemed odd.

- The sequence with Rose and Finn about to be executed was lame. I really enjoyed the captain of the Resistance ship turning it around and slicing through the First Order ship. The no sound also was a great touch. Then they cut to Rose and Finn and everyone around them is dead yet they both survive without a scratch and also are totally free of their shackles somehow. Also Phasma and the other stormtroopers who were right there next to them are suddenly further down the corridor and have to come up and start to confront them. Again it just didn't flow well.

- Agree with alot of others here that the fight scene in Snoke's chamber was amazing. Nothing more can be said. I had a feeling from the last movie that Kylo was going to want to get rid of Snoke somehow. Also I don't think that we know yet about Rey's parents. Feel Kylo was just trying to get her to join him and threw a lie out there. In the first movie Kylo got very emotional when he heard that a girl helped the Droid escape. I think he knew something even then.

- In watching it next time I will need to listen again as to why the First Order cruiser cant get up on the Resistance cruiser and take it out. They can track them through space but now can't close on them? I am suspecting there is something I may have just missed so won't throw judgement on that at this time.

- Why did the new captain of the resistance cruiser not tell anyone what the plan was until they were ready to evacuate? I am assuming that they headed towards that planet with the old base on it as they knew they were running out of fuel. I guess the obvious answer is probably that some of the other things wouldn't have happened if it had been revealed right away but still just seemed weird.

I think I may be nitpicking over minor details to the plot however overall I would still say the movie was ok for a casual viewer like myself. Can definitely see how it was disappointing to others who were expecting more. I like that it wasn't just another clone of a prior movie like Force Awakens was. Also I did like some of the comedy that they threw in there as well.

So one thing I didn’t think about til someone pointed it out was how the hell the bombers work in space. We’ve never had gravity dependent bombers. If they changed it to like them having to blast from straight above or something, sure, with like a beam of some sort, but dropping bombs makes no sense.

Also noted in Ben Shapiro’s review, Holdo and DJ sucked and were just celeb cameos. I hated them both. Had Dern told Poe her plan, we eliminate the crappy casino world, and could’ve had more buildup on Crait and seen those big new walkers do more and have more than 5s of screen time.

I’m also slightly turning on this trilogy. It’s undoing all of the work of 1-6, they’re just killing off the characters we wanted to see back. All the heroes we do see now are barely set pieces or hardly themselves. Hamill said it best that Luke wouldn’t just have run off for however many years, he’s a Jedi and has hope. Why would he just give up. Yoda wouldn’t have pushed him prior to go and stop Kylo?

And watching Kevin Smiths review, it’s clear Rian crapped all over the plot set up by JJ by killing off Snoke, offing Luke, Phasma still sucks. All those new things and Rian is like hey, here’s porgs. *sigh*

I watched maybe half of it on my firestick last night. I'll finish it today. I turned it off, not because it wasn't good, but because I was tired. What I've seen so far was pretty good.

Admittedly I am not as much of a Star Wars "nerd" as many people are but in my opinion the last two movies have been made for the masses instead of the diehards.

That's pretty much how I feel as well. In talking to people I know that have seen it, the less of a Star Wars fan you are, the more you liked this particular movie. They weren't interested in advancing the story in a way that makes sense, they were looking to sell toys and set themselves up to make Star Wars movies until we are all dead. I enjoyed the movie and plan to see it again, but I'm not as excited about it as I have been other SW movies.

I'm always up for more Star Wars, but part of the draw for me was the rarity. If we get some sort of Star Wars movie every year, I'm going to get bored with it down the road.

I guess I’m the only Star Wars fan in the world who enjoyed the movie and liked the direction it is taking us.

Maybe the ships are so big they create some of their own gravity?

I didn't have a problem with the bombs, because it's pretty clear that there's gravity inside of every ship. If the bombs start dropping from inside the ship, it would make sense that they'd continue on the same path. It just seemed to be a plot point that they were required to take out that particular type of enemy fighter.

I've suspended belief in terms of science and physics for Star Wars given that there has been sound in space, explosions in space, swords made up of light, so on and so forth. The bombs thing didn't bug me since I thought it was actually neat. I liked the feel of a World War II bombed.

Am I the only one who actually wanted Rey to take Kylo’s hand?

I felt like that whole movie Rian was setting up some kind of spectacular shift away from the absolutes of Dark v Light. The myriad of references to a need to balance dark and light forces I thought was setting the stage for Rey and Kylo to form a new path: ‘the grey’. Essentially, no one is all good or all evil, a message that was reiterated numerous times throughout the movie. Luke’s moment of weakness in wanting to kill young Kylo and the code breaker’s character served as a great foil for this concept (as demonstrated in his conversations with Finn and Rey).

This formation of a new branch of the force would have contextualized so much more of the movie and brought the whole thing together.

I’m on my phone so can’t elaborate further right now, but essentially my biggest gripe with TLJ was how I felt the entire movie was built on setting up this radical new branch of force power that was neither sith nor Jedi, just to have Rian (or the trilogy story line decision makers) backpedal into the same predictable storyline thus making almost the entire plot of 8 empty.

I tend to agree with this. It seemed like that was the path they were going to whole time although i don't know know what they would have done with part 9 then.

That kid at the end with the broom, when he was yelling as the animals left their stalls it reminded me of Anakin in a similar scene from the prequels. Reading thread now, just got out.

Unless I missed it since skipped a few posts I'm surprised no one mentioned them not showing Rey leaving in the escape ship and anything after the lightsaber break before we see her in the Millennium Falcon. Apparently an unconscious Kylo Ren just there...completely vulnerable.

Wonder if that's what really happened, maybe we will get a flashback though not sure why it wasn't included.

Another thing about that scene that I wasn't sure about: did General Hux grab for his blaster when he saw Kylo lying on the ground as if to shoot him? Then Kylo gets up and Hux takes his hand out from whatever he was reaching for.

Yeah it seemed to me that Hux meant to kill Kylo before he woke up.
