Why do people call others "bud" or "buddy"?

Most of us are mature and old on this site. Having someone call me bud is beyond weird to me.

The only people on this world that should be called buddy is if they are 8 years old or younger. It makes the speaker sound like the are in charge of the other person. rude

I use buddy all the time in telling stories to co-workers

For some reason when I say, "I was at my friend's house....." sounds to me like I only have one friend, whereas, "I was at my buddy's house....." doesn't sound like that to me so that's generally how I use it around the office

What I don't get is why you are so mad about it. Your view of it appears to a very minority view of the term. Most people consider it a term of endearment and friendship. Obviously nobody is attempting to insult you by using it on here, so why so mad?
