the rack packs were thicker and used a header card all the way up to 1980....in baseball some 1980 racks had the cardboard header and some had the thinner plastic header/wrappers as they switched over.

the thicker packs with the cardboard header cards were actually slightly longer due to the stiffness of the packs. the overall rack boxes were a bit longer for those years.

when the packs went to the thinner wrapping and could be folded a bit easier, the boxes reduced their overall length.

i have also seen some 1982 baseball with the mix of cardboard headers with thicker plastic.

Thanks!

Here's a couple of recent pickups from a member here who is selling off most of his collection. Both great examples of high eye appeal mid-grade cards.

I was finally able to work a deal for this '52 Mantle. It's a nice upgrade from the PSA 2 I have. Much better centering and no creases. It's also a Type 2 vs. the Type 1 I already had. You can see some of the differences in the second side by side scan.

That is a monster, when that card was listed I was thinking that card is much better centered than the picture had shown. I mean wow a 2.5 w/o any creases great centering, just an amazing addition. What is type 2? Just a later printing? I can see the name plate is different.

Congrats on that monster!

Thank you. The Mantle was a double print, so it appeared twice on a sheet with slight differences. Here is a quick guide to Type 1 vs Type 2:

Type 1: Front: Bottom left corner is not completely square, Yankees logo has solid black border. Back: Stitches of baseball point left and "h" in "Right" and "s" in "DiMaggio's" are aligned.

Type 2: Front: White spot along left side about 1/4 way down, top borders extend beyond side borders, Yankees logo has partial black border, border around Mantle's name is wavy. Back: Stitches of baseball point right, "t" in "Right" and "s" in "Dimaggio's" are aligned.

I also picked up the card that follows Mantle in the '52 Topps set this week. Found this nice #312 Jackie Robinson with good centering. It does have an "indentation" and light crease near the top left that is visible at the right angle, but I feel it has great eye appeal for the grade:

Great info thanks so much. Is one type preferred over the other?

That Robinson is awesome as well!

Not entirely sure, though I have read that some folks feel the Type 1 is a brighter or more colorful version.

Thank you. For now I'm keeping both. It's a cool card to have doubles of and neat having both variations.
