Default here's a fun exchange of text messages I had this morning.

So while I finish nursing school I'm working security over night in a couple of hotels on miami beach . I'm getting garbage pay <10 and have been managing due to the tips I'm getting in my Thursday to Sat night [11pm-7am] Spot. Last night I get told I'm wanted to fill in at a high end hotel where I'll have to work 9-6pm and get no tips. Normally one thinks high end =better tips, well not with this company. So I told him that I have an issue with the hours (I'll be sacrificing sat night bcuz as opposed to leaving to go to work at 1030, I'll have to go at 830 and the pay will be greatly less. I told him that my normal hotel I'm working at is at full capacity and I'm averaging $20 in tips [pernight] since Thursday night. So that I don't want to work the other (highend) location.

The response I got from my boss/ssupervisor/owner of the company?
"Sometimes you gotta do things to help people and its not always about the money."

Are you f-ing kidding me? The high end hotel averages $600 a room per night and is not unusual to see $5k-7k hotel bills. I'm making under $10 to work over night. Instead of offering an incentive he is asking me to be a "team player". Needless to say I'm pissed.

My respone?

Yea I'll remember being a team player as I look at my <$10 pH overnight salary

//end rant

Yah gotta love management when they insist your job shouldn't be about money.

Well, it's not a career... So what purpose does it serve then?

Security at a hotel? Just find an empty room to party in.

I work in the large transport repair industry and we deal with this all the time. Obviously there are different levels of experience so the lower guys at times will say , well that's not my job or I didn't know so I try to explain to them along with everyone that we all have the same objective and getting the buses and trucks road ready is/should be everyone's goal. Whether its you job or not we need to come together to complete the job.
Most of out lower level guys are young and just getting their feet wet in the working world , for some reason they feel that once they complete a task their job is over. The guys that have initiative are the ones we keep past the 90 day period and usually work out the longest. We pay for ASE , CDL exams and other large vehicle test so the serious ones usually stick around long enough to complete the classes.
Not sure why youre upset about not getting tips when you already make $10 an hour. Some of the best food service employees make way less than $10 plus tips (sometimes)

i think he's upset because this high-end location wants him to sacrifice hours he could spend at the other place to make supplemental tips(and inconvenience him) to work at this high end place that rakes in more money but doesn't pay him any more than the other places.

that text they sent would have riled me up too, OP. I would have said something a bit worse or snarky back and been like "yep, and sometimes we don't have security guards because we are cheap".

I always laugh when people that hold jobs requiring no skill feel they are worth and/or entitled to more. Do as your company says and be thankful you have a job that pays above minimum wage.

You think nursing will be better? Many more demands, terrible patients and their families, and terrible hours to start.

Have fun being an entry level nurse. You think 5k-7k bills are a lot for hotels? Wait for your patients 50k weekend hospital stay.

And who tips a security guard?

Yessa Masseh? Pretty much the worst advice in the world right here.

Instead, respect yourself, speak up, and have firm boundaries. World would be a much better place if more workers held their employers accountable.

As long they can make payroll, that's all the accountability they need.

Nice to see that blowouts's resident Limbaugh's just can't resist the temptation to keep their jackboot's out of any innocuous thread at all.

It's laughable that you say that I feel entitled to more. I bust my ass to get those tips and make working at slightly above minimum wage worth it. I live off of my savings and work so that at the end of the year I can claim in my taxes. I have 3 kids and bills and to compare working as a nurse to security than you my friend are a comedian.ill take #@#@#@#@ from patients and their families because as a nurse I care for my patients. And at the end of the day working as a nurse getting 20-40p/h is nothing like 9ph.

You guys posted the bachlorette picture and its funny because one of the big tippers was a bachlorette party of 17 staying at the hotel the whole weekend.

I work for a security company and I'm the sole s/o in the locations I work. So the hotels keeping their contracts really depends on not only my coworkers who man other shifts but also me.

And to those who get benefits/training from your companies kudos to you. I had to pay $300 for a security license/"training" through this company so I don't owe them anything.

How does a security guard at a hotel get tipped? I never heard of that. Are you carrying drunk girls from their taxis to their rooms? I can't think of a scenario where I'd tip a security guard anywhere....this is coming from someone who used to be in the security guard industry making minimum wage

Assisting drunk guests is a part of it. I make sure guests aren't disturbed when at the lounge, I help with luggage and sometimes even house keeping aka delivering towels/pillows etc, providing culinary dining advice at 2-5am. And giving pointers as to what restaurants in the area to hit up.

Creating a pleasant environment when guests are just coming back from a long night of partying gets tips. Opening doors and assisting with taxi and Uber also helps

Working security on miami beach is interesting to say the least . From guys checking in to the hotel in full religious gear who sneak out at 3pm to pick up hookers, to guys in sports cars rolling up with a stack of Victoria secret models in the back seat, you never know what to expect in south beach

If it's not about the money, perhaps they should do it.

spot on..

when most people think "security guard" they think of that Paul Blart bs for malls..

most security guards at hotels, as you post, do much more than just security

i worked for a company at a high priced hotel in town, and usually besides the bar/restaurant workers, who were closing up when i came in...there was only the front desk worker as the only other employee on shift

so..had to deliver towels, bedding, cribs, pillows..

also had to do minor maintenance- lightswitch/power issues, tv/remote issues, telephone issues..

also had to deliver the nightly "quick checkout bills", daily morning newspapers and make fresh coffee

although at the time i was getting paid pretty well...but also never recieved any raises or benefits..

only tip i really ever got was from Jeff Jarrett and Eric Bischoff for bringin luggage to their rooms after it was delivered late
