Get rid of Baez... He really isn't good.

He isn’t, but he doesn’t need to be. He’s a perfect complementary piece for the overall mix of talent on that team, notwithstanding that he still has work to do to actualize more of his offensive potential.
That team doesn’t need Machado given what he would cost and the positions he plays. They need solid pitching with those resources. Machado is a great player, no doubt. He’s better straight up than Baez, right now and probably forever. But he’s not in any way a need or any semblance of a realistic luxury for the Cubs. Really, truly, sincerely, desperately hope there is no truth to the rumors about the Cubs pursuing Darvish.
Unless his market has totally collapsed, I can’t see the long term strategic point in doing that. If they are going to pay a current FA $25 million+ per year for 5-6 years, might as well re-sign the bearded devil they already know. Seems like a very high risk that Darvish’s best days are waaayyy behind him. And such a move would seem to badly violate the typical Theo playbook. Am guessing (or at least hoping) these rumors are a ruse to try to gain leverage with Cobb or maybe even Arrieta and/or teams currently demanding too much in potential trades for top tier starters. |

There's a report (Japan and U.S.) about the Cubs "kicking the tires" on a possible Yu Darvish deal. IF!!!!!!!!!!!!! healthy i'd honestly take him over Arrieta. More proven when both are healthy.

If nothing else, compare their respective WS performances the last couple years. No comparison. Darvish sucks. |

Darvish sucks, at least relative to his likely cost at this point. Signing him for all those years and all that money would be catastrophic to the Cubs’ chances of winning another WS.

It’s just money.... I’m ok with a Darvish signing...The Cubs are going to be printing money with the new TV deal looming... I know, I know paying all the kids... The Cubs will have the cash, and the Ricketts will spend the cash on the team...
The key is adding a lets say, #3/4 starter, and not having to give up anything in return... This might also be an attempt at getting Cobb to sign, in fear the Cubs have moved on... I’m anxious to see who or how they fill out the rotation...

I don’t care as long as it doesn’t affect our integrity with getting Harper

The Cubs will certainly have loads of money in the coming years, but they still have to be wise in how they spend it if they want to retain flexibility and stay competitive indefinitely. $150 million+ for Yu Darvish for upwards of 6 years makes no more sense (and arguably even less sense) than re-signing Arrieta in that range. The risks far outweigh the likely rewards in that value range. Sure, if they could get him for 3-4 years for under $100 million total, the verdict would likely be different, but no indication yet that his market has sunk that low, and doubtful that it will. Very interesting, though, that Arrieta seems to be generating a lot more rumor chatter overall so far than Darvish. |

But I think there’s a more realistic chance of the Harper thing actually happening, even though I don’t think either are very likely. |

Well, ‘tis the season for disinformation campaigns and feints and fakes to distract from true intentions, so have to take all these rumors with due skepticism. But that said, it does sound like there really might be something to this Darvish to Cubs story.
After reading a lot of pro and con commentary the last few days, I still don’t love the possibility and don’t actively want it to happen, but if it does happen, I guess I can invoke my enduring, blindish faith in Theo and Jed to accept it and try to find some logic in it. If Cobb is being unrealistically greedy and they can’t bring him down, maybe paying that much more for Darvish makes sense. (Would really like to hear someday why Darvish and not Arrieta, but not too hard to guess at some possible reasons in the absence of direct confirmation.) Also sounds like Wolves4Life’s fantasy about Machado playing SS for the Cubs isn’t as totally fanciful as I once thought. Don’t want it to happen (for either Russell or Baez), and don’t think it will happen, but am coming to grips with the existence of some possibility it really could happen. Very interesting and fluid times. Can only imagine what a chaotic sideshow next year is going to be. While sorta frustrating sometimes from an anxious team fan perspective, I guess it’s good for the sport as a whole to have offseason drama that keeps it from being totally off folks’ radars until Spring Training. |

Just read a report on Cubs Insider that Orioles may have asked for Russell, Almora, and Montgomery in exchange for one year of Machado.
Needless to say, he ain’t comin’ to Chicago (at least the North Side—sorry, Wolves4Life—not really, but just a thing to say, I guess). If that’s true, no wonder that franchise is in borderline shambles. They’ve obviously got hallucinogenic contamination of their water supply. WOW! |
