Default Planning a 7 day vactation to Japan - Advice

Looking for advice from anyone that has been to Japan recently. We are planning on hitting Tokyo and Kyoto for sure. What would you recommend doing while in Japan, besides the usual museum tours and walking around Tokyo.

Thanks!

Walk around every day taking tons of photos of the locals like you’re on safari

Or do what party boy did from the jackass show.

Enjoy your trip, should be a lot of fun

Kyoto - silver pavilion (kinkakuji) and kiyomizu are absolutely cannot miss. Gold pavilion (ginkakuji) is ok too. Philosophers walk from silver pavilion. There’s a couple of amazing shopping streets and the best tonkatsu restaurant in the land, the names escape me now. Consider a day trip to Nara to see the giant wooden Buddha and play with the deer in the park in the middle of the city. Consider a day trip (or overnight in an onsen, steam baths that your gal pal will love) to Miyajima island. Consider a day trip to Enrakuji temple up the mountain from Kyoto. You’ll take awesome trains and funiculars and the temples up there are spectacular.

I’ve been 7-8 times and took my wife there ok our honeymoon 5.5 years ago. Amazing trip. I speak enough to get by but honestly you probably only need English. I will try and dig up my itinerary from our last trip if desired.

Thank you for all of this! An itinerary would be wonderful if you still have it.

Tell us how your toilet experience is. I hear they have super nice toilets. Japan is known for their awesome poop experience.

Couldn’t find the itinerary as it wasn’t in email and I’ve changed computers who knows how many times. The shopping streets that I found the most fun were on and by Teramachi (called Teramachidoori). There’s two of the tonkatsu restaurants there. You’ll thank me later. My other advice is to plan your train and street car travel ahead of time. The JR website is really easy to use. All the trains have English-ish names on them and I think most of the announcements are in Japanese and English. I still use the JR (japan railways) notification tone as my text message alert.

I’m sitting in the dmv and typing on my phone so if I remember more later I will add. I know there’s some folks that often post in baseball threads that actually live or work in Japan who may be able to help more.

And most places now have western toilets. Many of the higher class ones have fancy Toto seats that are heated and have a bidet and air dry blower. So amazing. I tried to buy one for my house but our toilets were too old school and not compatible. Lol.

If you have to use a trough, then you’ll know why many Japanese have such strong quads

I cannot personally speak for myself, but my brother in law (who is currently an expat living in Thailand) goes there quite a bit, maybe 3-4 times a year. He says nothing but great things about Akihabara, Juso and Kabukicho.

Go to a baseball game, depending on what time of year you are going. Sumo wrestling match maybe. Play some pachinko machines.

We are going on the 17th in this month and coming back on the 27th. My boss got us business class tickets out of LAX

Definitely plan on trying to get sumo tickets. There is a tournament starting on the 14th runs through our whole trip.

If you’re confronted by an angry person with a missing pinky, run. This is both good advice and mostly a joke, till it happened, then it was less funny.

I recommend McDonald’s for a meal. I know what you’re thinking, why the hell would I go to the other side of the world and eat at McDonald’s? Because the ones in Japan have some unique menu options that are so worth trying. Also they have dozens of weird varieties of American sodas we don’t get here. Man now I’m hungry.

Their 7-11s are actually packed with great food choices as well. Many you tubers vlog about 7-11 meals in japan.

Aside from Sushi and hitting up the street food scene outside of Tsukiji fish market, get a good Tonkatsu meal (Pork Cutlet). I can only talk about food because thats my passion!!

It's been 20 years since I lived there, but the Grand Sumo tournament was worth every penny.

I'd spend 7 days eating! I miss the food so much.
