Leafs acquires the rights to Sportkings
Leafs acquires the rights to Sportkings
03.17 By Susan Lulgjuraj | Beckett Sports Card Monthly Editor LAS VEGAS – Leaf has acquired the rights to Sportkings. Leaf CEO Brian Gray told Beckett Media at the 2014 Industry Summit that his company is working on a new release, which is slated to come out around the 2014 National Sports Collector Convention. “We are getting all new names in the product,” Gray told Beckett Media. “We got (Michael) Phelps, he’s never been in it before. We got Ichiro in there. We’ll also have guys like (Johnny) Manziel and Jadeveon Clowney.” Gray said the product would feature many newer names. Sportkings, which was owned by In The Game’s Dr. Brian Price, was a re-make of a vintage set. The original appeared in 1933 featuring players from a wide range of sports such as baseball’s Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth, football’s Jim Thorpe and boxing’s Jack Dempsey. The set highlighted skiers, cyclists and wrestler, too. Last year’s offering featured autographed from Bob Griese, Don Shula, Kerri Strug and Tito Ortiz. Jadeveon Clowney, in Sportkings?
Guess I don't need to keep collecting the base set anymore. Or even think about buying any SK at all. |

It sure was!
I will admit that I'm sad to see it change hands. But at least the brand continues to exist. Hopefully that will be more positive than negative. Phelps and Ichiro are deserving of the Sport Kings title. As long as these types of players dominate the product, it should do well and stand the test of time. Standing the test of time was always a main reason why I collected a product that housed the worlds greatest sports figures. |

80-90 dollars a box... Not a lot to ask these days Leaf likes to add lots of hits... I think they will improve the product.. If they can keep the base set the same and add value with the hits... im in |

So the NHL cards will have logos now? I guess that's a plus.

My initial thought...price will have to go up, or quality will have to go down, in order to add 2 to 3 more hits per box. I hope I'm wrong. Maybe he won't need to add any big hits like Christy Mathewson, Bruce Lee, Martin Luther King Jr., etc. cut autos in order to keep the costs down. |

Leaf said awhile back by 2015 I believe that all of their cards would be on-card. Not sure if thats still the plan.

Sportkings has never had a sticker auto, so hopefully that tradition continues.

I agree. Would hurt the brand massively to start a trend of sticker autographs. If anything seeing this news makes me want to scoop up previous Sportkings releases.
