Default Wasted hits with Michael Sam

Why is this guy in National Treasures? He never played one NFL game, never made it on an NFL team, and will probably never appear in the NFL ever. Am I missing something, or is this something new: the "gay" hit card?

I am sure it appeals to the gay collectors out there. Maybe card companies are trying to find a new market base in the gay community. Heck everyone else seems to be courting the gays lately.......why not the card companies as well. And yes I think its silly!!

Aside from the gay thing... yes card companies put players who never played in a game in their products a few examples -

last year it was Ryan Swope a 6th round WR who got a concussion before the season and retired yet was in every product.

in 2010 it was Sean Canfield.. he was drafted by the Saints and cut.. yet he was in every product.

This year its Sam and Boyd.. although Boyd has been signed by the steelers but had still yet to play a game

Could you not ask the same question about why Tajh Boyd is in NT, too?

Pretty sure QB's get a pass. People would be saying that about Brady I imagine. I have not seen anyone drafted 249th overall make a product.

My shop owner tried to explain that these cards were already probably made at the beginning of the year? I highly doubt it, but why could they not have replaced Boyd or Sam with point cards? I'm sure there are few other players that could fit in this scenerio but it does seem like a real kick to the consumers nuts by placing these guys in the products, especially the high end ones!

But yet Sam's stuff sells better or equal to Tajh in general.

Did you miss all the #249 Sean Renfree's in 2013, or we giving him a pass as a QB? Chandler Harnish was #254, but also another QB...

It's obvious these companies put Sam in the product because of the media attention and casual public interest in his story. His Q score was probably off the chart from the Draft day through final cuts. Would not surprise me if Sam outsold and outsells half the rookie class to this day.

I wish they put fewer late round guys in the product, but that would kill production levels and a lot of people would complain that their favorite 3rd string college player is being excluded. Hopefully Panaini uses College Contenders to put a card out for every draft eligible player, and uses only 1st or 2nd rounds in NFL Contenders.

You must not watch his stuff on eBay, it sells quite high for a UDFA player who hasn't played a snap in an NFL game.

You hate him cause he's gay?

They do this sh*t every year.

I think of lot of frustration comes with seeing players like Sam and Boyd (along with many other players who never played/didn't make a roster) included in products like NT and Contenders when there are so many other significant rookies left out of these products altogether who not only made teams and played this year, but had a pretty significant impact, and who would sell arguably a lot better.

The real issue here is Panini not making the effort to include players like this more, year over year, but instead choosing to recycle the same duds throughout their entire year's worth of products.

Michael Sam "game used" butt out pants coming to a product real soon.

Seriously though. I dont know any other d lineman picked in the 7th round that has a card in NT. So yes, he is in the product due to being gay.

Manziel has accomplished nothing yet they put out thousands of autograph cards of him and put his cards on their sell sheet. That is offensive to me, they should take him out and replace them with autos of Vinny Testaverde, he played for 32 years so he is more deserving.

Panini fills their checklist with the people who they think would sell the best in the card market, which is early rounders, all QBs, and in this case a 7th rounder with a Q score of a 1st rounder. The quality of the players themselves does not matter. Deserves got nothin to do with it.

He is in there because he is the first openly gay player in the NFL and that in turn brings in new collectors or puts more of a premium on his cards no matter what he does. He's also going to hold value with others who might not be football fans but know him from different TV shows.

It is a first in a major sport which is a big thing no matter how it turns out. Similar to Manon Rheaume in the early 90's where she was the first female to play in n NHL game. It was preseason and she never played an NHL during the regular season but to this day nearly 25 years later her cards are still sought after

He's there for the same reason Tebow had cards through 2013. He's a gimmick with a market. Not to mention a washout's autograph has to be pretty damn cheap to secure.
