Default What exactly is COMC?

Can someone explain what COMC.com is? Is it like eBay? I have been looking into trying to sell some cards on the site but I don't really understand how it works or what it is. Any help would be great!

The link that glen gave you is very helpful.

COMC is basically a consignment service. You send in the cards, they process them to your account, you price them, and wait for offers to come in.

I'm a fan of the concept of COMC, however I think the fees to process orders is really high. I also think the redemption process is complete crap. I have been sitting on a redemption that has been live for over 2 years.

They use to run a national special that would allow you to submit a 350 count box of cards stuffed for $70. However they haven't done that the last few years, so I've pretty much stopped using the site.

I've been around the block a few times and I don't get it at all. Maybe I just don't understand. Between the initial fee, the monthly fee and the cashout fee, where exactly is the profit coming from on lower end cards? I see cards selling for under a dollar and it doesn't make sense to me.

Cards under $1 do not have a storage fee. So low end refractors are pretty easy to move and don't cost you anything if they sit around for a long time.

Your still paying 30c to list and then 20% to cash out. Also I believe COMC takes 25c of that as the shipping fee.

its place I go about once a week
see if I can anticipate some upwards movement
occasionally it will result in a decent flip
more often I use it to find some nice cards of obscure players that no one on ebay has for sale before they go up to a point that youll find them on listed on ebay for 3-4x
occasionally worthwhile, occasionally futile
I don't send cards in to submit, just keep a sm catalogue of stuff Ive bought on there and couple times a year request a shipment
If used properly it will net you some occasional free cards

I'm a big fan. I take most of the cards I would normally sell on eBay that would sell for under $20. To date I've sold 1,859 cards for $3,860 and purchased 476 cards for $3,760 I've never actually cashed out for profit. I just use the cards I sell to buy more cards because I'm an addict. It's nice to be able to get rid of the crap I dont want and buy cards that I do want.

no -

you pay $0.30 to list (unless it is a flip, or from epack)

you price it at $1.00

you cash out so you get $0.80

buyer pays the $0.25

Not exactly true, you still have the cost to ship to COMC as well as the processing fee per card. The spirit of what you were trying to convey is true though, COMC is a great place to send stuff that would otherwise be collecting dust.

The fees are brutal so cards that will sell well on Ebay aren't a slam dunk on COMC but low end refractors are. I sell plenty of those everyday and the nickels, dimes and quarters add up quickly. Still, it does cost to get them listed though.

To be fair, I've sold tons of high end cards on COMC too but don't send them in any longer, the fees are just too high in comparison to Ebay.

I feel if they relaxed the fees a bit they would make a killing just off of the amount of additional users they would gain.

I'm actually very ok with the fees they charge. Selling low end cards on ebay is such a hassle. COMC can have that extra 10% or so for me to not have to worry about listing, packing, and shipping a bunch of low end stuff.

Agreed ... on low end. Anything of value is brutal though. Say I have a $100 card listed on COMC. COMC cross lists that card with Amazon/Ebay. If the card sells I am out;

* Fee to get the card to COMC. Hardly worth mentioning as it was likely sent in a very large submission so probably less than .05.

* Storage fee of .01 per month. Again, hardly worth mentioning on a per card basis but when you have thousands of cards listed that are subject to storage fees, it adds up very quickly.

* Monthly fee of $50 to raise the limit of my storage threshold. This is a BS fee that further penalizes higher end items. Yes, I could not participate but then my monthly storage hit would be even higher.

* Ebay/Amazon immediate hit of 20%.

* COMC 20% cash out fee.

If my $100 card sells on COMC from a Ebay/Amazon buyer I am going to net at best, 60% vs the 85% I'd get if just listing it on Ebay myself. Even better, send them to Probstein, PWCC or someone similar and pay 15% or less while they deal with the headaches.

There is also the benefit of the card being in my possession and not COMC's. Go ahead, ask them what happens to your cards should they go bankrupt or the warehouse burn down. Don't expect an answer though, I've been asking for years and am still waiting.

The fees on high end are brutal. But selling cheap stuff is nice and can add up. Instead of cashing out, I usually end up buying a nicer high end card that is reasonably priced.
