Default Long Time Collectors: What were the biggest collecting "frenzies" you ever witnessed?

To kind of piggyback off my other thread about the most collectable players of all time:

To those who have been collecting for decades, what were the biggest collecting frenzies you ever witnessed?

- Bo Jackson prices in the late 1980s?
- Reggie Bush in 2006?
- Manning v Leaf in 1998?
- The "all time" QB class of 1999?
- Luck v RG3 in 2012?

And it doesn't have to be football.

- Linsanity?
- The homerun race of 1998?

It could also be something you witnessed in person.

- Someone mortgaging their house to bust more wax?
- Two collectors getting into a fist fight at an LCS?

Let's hear some interesting stories guys!

1990 Leaf baseball. There was a period in, I believe it was 1991, where if you looked in the Beckett price guide literally every single card from the set, including the commons, had up arrows next to them. It marked the first time in my collecting life, which at that point was about five years old, where I truly witnessed hysteria over a certain set. Packs started escalating into the $10 plus territory which was unheard of. 1989 Upper Deck also started to climb to pretty astronomical heights. Premium cards were taking over the industry in a way that I had never seen before.

I will always remember shaqs rc year. As a kid, he was the biggest athlete ever. I had the pumps and pulled the Topps gold foil rc from a rack pack. Just a fun time.

Also, Frank Thomas was pretty great. I remember a guy pulled the 1992 fleet rc sensations and the shop owner traded him a Walter Payton rc for it.

2006 Football - people were paying big money for all of the big rookies - Vince Young, Matt Leinart, Cutler, Reggie Bush, etc. I think that RC class made everyone scared about rookies for quite some time.

The homerun chase of 1998. I was buying Griffen and Sosa at the time. Couldn't find a McGuire in decent enough shape to purchase.

I'd have to say that period of time from around '89 to '93. Everybody and their brother was going to retire off Pro Set variants, 89 Griffeys and Shaq rookies. Stuff serial numbered to 5k would go for $20 at shows.

The Bash Brother's in the 80's everyone wanted those Canseco, and McGwire rookie cards. 1986 Conseco Donruss RR back in 1986 was the card to have.

Recent ones I remember: Linsanity, Steph Curry & Stephen Strasburg were pretty big I thought. Any time a base topps rookie sells for over $550 I think that's pretty crazy.

Stephen Strasburg was huge. Also Reggie bush! I also remember Bryce Harper hype when he first was drafted but wasn't near Strasburg. Also the Alex Gordon Topps #297 2006 Rookie Card debacle. Card was not supposed to be produced. It was accidently inserted into blasters that were found at Walmarts and people went nuts, even for the Cut-Outs and blank versions. AMAZING. Have always wanted a full one.

1992 Topps Finest Baseball.

I remember packs of these going for 24$ each, which was totally unheard of back then.

The worst craze to me has to be Linsanity, without question it was insane.

I sure loved me some 05/06 upper deck Hockey.. Series 2 had series 1 RCS inserted in the same boxes..there were only 40 rookies in the set. Young guns were inserted 1 in every 4 packs.. Crosby was selling for 3-400, Ovechkin 150-200, Crosby series 2 rc 100, Lundquist 40-60, Phaneuf 50, and many others in the 10-20 range. I opened 2 cases of blasters and made a 1k profit. It was the most sure fire product I could think of... You couldn't lose

What's up bro?

Not sure how much it went for back then, but the Shaq Beam Team is still pretty expensive. Well at least compared to his other cards from that year.

How about the Original Dream Team and the McDonald's cards?
