So, it appears that this could "potentially" make the return game more relevant...interesting to say the least. Not sure if these ideas will actually transfer over to making that a more prominent part of the game, but from a highlight fan like myself, it would make that part of the game a lot of fun to watch if return TDs could happen more often.

Just get rid of the kickoffs already. Start each team at the 25. That part of the game has been ruined anyways.

So what happens with onside kicks?

This is stupid. Just my opinion.

There will be no running start or pre-kick motion by cover teams and no wedge blocks by return squads.

Also, there will be a 15-yard, non-contact zone from the spot of the kick, with the return team required to have a minimum of eight players lined up 15 yards from the ball. The expectation is that this will not only take some of the bigger linemen off the field because there will be a premium on agility and speed to operate in space, but also eliminate some of the violent collisions on the back end of the play. As described, the coverage will resemble what's normally seen on a punt than a "traditional" kickoff.

I get it... but you know how many players get/keep their jobs due to the kick off?

Not a popular opinion but one that I've been spouting for years. I'd get rid of field goals, punts and extra points too. If you couldn't tell, I'm not a fan of kickers. I'd like to see true four down football and fighting for every inch of field advantage.

Based on this, some of the guys would be losing their jobs. So the smaller guys will be out there only

So shouldn't the kicker always do the ten yard dribbler to himself now?

I have no problem with this. I saw someone comment on the nfl.com story that (paraphrasing):

"these guys make a lot of money and other people do dangerous jobs for less. If they don't like it, don't play."

My bloodlust is not so strong I need to see these young men turn into vegetables just so the kickoff return stays "pure". And dangerous jobs don't mean that we don't strive for safety. A crazy amount of concussions occur in kickoffs. There isn't a guy on this board that would survive 5 snaps in an NFL game unless they ran away from the action. These are crazy strong, big, fast men. I hope the NFL tinkers with everything until they get it right. Like, I wish they would adopt the college o/t format. That would be awesome.

yea but those big guys are normally 2nd string lineman that would still be on the team... there are guys who make the team solely based on special teams and play only special teams... we're talking 5-6th wrs and CBs... 3rd-4th string rbs... guys that know they can literally be cut any day because there's a plethora of fast nfl guys out there. As for lineman they're more valuable because they are asked to be able to play multiple positions on the Oline to make the team.

He has to stand still and just kick it. No running

I don't think that's true, just the guys around him can no longer get a running start.

I don't care about this a ton, except if the onside kick goes away it is a complete travesty to the game. Onside kick is a last chance hope for some teams and at least provides some excitement at the end of the game; if it goes away and the kicking team has no chance and getting the ball back then it makes end of game situations potentially boring.
