You still hear plenty of tales of players at these sort of events being a prick. Not saying the Rocket isn't, but the cited example would suggest it wasn't 100% of the time.

Edit: Meant Ripken, not Clemens.

And I'm assuming he was being paid to be there. Not that that always makes a difference to some of the surlier athletes and other celebs, but I agree that's all way different than folks trying to approach him in other, more casual settings.

I suppose if you consider a dozen or so people a large public event.
Like I said, there was a lot of one on one time with each individual and I personally witnessed nothing resembling arrogance or him being an #@#@#@#@#@#@#@. Perfect gentleman to everyone. Acted like he wanted to be there, not like he had to be there.
Anyways, just adding my opinion on the subject. Sorry if you feel he treated you badly in the past.

I suppose anyone can be though to be an #@#@#@#@#@#@#@ on any given day. We've all had "one of those days".
Heck I consider myself to be a pretty nice guy, but I'm sure there's a few here that think I'm a prick.

Jose Canseco spent a whole career shitting on his fans and was such a dick he was frequently booed at home games. He was rude, ignored all autograph request, and was a straight up #@#@#@#@#@#@#@ from beginning to end. He also sponges off his fans by charging $2,500 to spend a day with him while on house arrest and to this day, still does it but not so publicly.

However, I met him in 2008 at a softball game and he was the sweetest guy EVER. He noticed I was too scared to approach him and asked me over to take a photo and then signed a couple of baseball cards I had and commented and laughed while looking at the old photos of himself. I was ... shocked. They say don't meet your heroes .... but I am thankful that I did.

Bingo - I'm glad a Boston fan recognizes that about Ortiz. He is the biggest phony/fraud there ever was (aside from ARod too, and I'm a Yankee fan)

I'm really surprised no one mentioned Richie Allen or Rogers Hornsby so far, but Alex Johnson and Milton Bradley really stand out as horrible.

Good call on Lackey. Also not a big name but Mat Latos for a lot of people here in San Diego.

I would probably quickly grow irritated if all I did all day was field autograph requests.

What would be more interesting would be a thread about athletes wives. The few that I have met seem even more entitled to some status.

My closest involvement with a star was a former Miss USA Chelsea Cooley. She could not have been more gracious. I was a nobody shooting her wedding and she was one of the nicest People you could've imagined.

I just shot the reception so the main photographer could party a bit, but of the 100 or so I shot, she stood out for all the right reasons.

At every turn there was absolute stunner title holding woman from teens to grandmothers. All had grace and charm and no drama. I have a new respect for the pagent queens.

At one time she was engaged or dating Joe Mauer.
