Non-sports autograph collectors- how do you collect?
For example, let's say you collect Walking Dead or Game of Thrones. When autographs are released, do you go for the all of the autographs released no matter what? Do you pick up the first time signers only? Do you use conventions to supplement your collection?
I'm just curious how people choose to collect some of their favorite shows/movies when you sometimes can't find people you want, are faced with having 4-5 different autograph cards of the same person, or are able to go to a convention, meet the person for less than what the card goes for. Do you consider resale value at all? If I use Walking Dead as an example, I try to have one autograph card of everyone that's signed. I don't want more than one of anybody on card unless the signature is significantly different. But for Carl/Chandler Riggs, he only signed season 1 and rather than drop money for a card of a character I don't like haha, I picked up an 8x10 of him from a convention for less. Or for Game of Thrones, I wanted Oberyn so I picked up his 8x10 from the 258 Authentic subscription service. So how do you go about yours?

Since I primarily collect Star Wars I'll comment on that.
I try to buy at least one box of sets I know I can complete from 1 or 2 boxes. I have a lot of Star Wars autographs. The majority is on cards, but I have some on 8x10s and such from in-person meetings. I keep them all in the same binder. I don't want multiples autos of someone I already have, even if they're in different sets/parallels. I met Billy Dee Williams at a show and had him sign an 8x10 - I have no interest in also tracking down a signed trading card. I also have a section in my binder of card autos from actors in Star Wars, but the card has them featured on another property (like Gwendoline Christie on a Game of Thrones card). This is why when new sets are announced, I'm most excited when they get bottom tier actors to sign who've never signed before vs Mark Hamill again. Not that I wouldn't be thrilled to pull a Hamill, but I already have his auto on a comic. I'd probably sell the card to get autos I need. I just want to have 1 of as many Star Wars participants - from actors to creators.

I stick to the key cards, and if I think there is potential, I buy multiples and just put them away for my 2 boys. For instance, I have 13 Robert Downey Jr Iron Man cards from Rittenhouse and 6 Chris Pratt GOTG autographed cards. Yes, I also get them all graded as well...I am also starting to focus on costume/ auto cards or dual auto cards...Methodology is more in line to what the sportscard side does...

I'm a scattershot collector, for a few reasons. I'm don't have a lot of excess funds to go chasing autographs, I have very eclectic interests, and I prefer in-person autographs, despite not having many opportunities to get them. I will get multiple autographs if they are on different media. For example, I have both an 8x10 photo and the book "Mime Very Own Book" signed by Doug Jones. There is a yearly convention in Myrtle Beach, X-Con, where I get most of my in-person autographs.
As far as looking at autographs for resale, my in-person autos are never considered for resale, I have them all made out to me. Autograph cards and other items of the like could be sold at anytime if I felt the need, as I don't have a personal connection to them.

I am completely switching to in person autographs from conventions. After a few conventions, I have come to appreciate meeting the actors and getting autographs for usually waaaaayyy cheaper than pack pulled cards. Most are very pleasant and interact with you depending on how long the line is, and most seem to appreciate their fans. I have a few duplicate autographs but mostly just care to have one per person I meet. My wife and I are huge scifi fans and this is something we can enjoy together, traveling and meeting the actors that we grew up watching. Resale is completely off the table now, because each card is a memory of time spent together meeting these people.

I collect actors I like. I don't worry with trying to collect all the autographed cards in a set. Unfortunately, most of the actors I like are liked by everyone else, so their cards are often out of my price range (Emily Bett Rickards, Emilia Clarke, etc). I was lucky enough to get Nina Dobrev out of a box of TVD season 1, but other than a Cobie Smulders from Agents of Shield, I haven't pulled any other expensive autos.
I prefer to pick up my autographs in person at conventions. 8x10s are harder to store because they take up more room, but I like being able to interact with the people, even if it is only for a few seconds because most of them seem to genuinely enjoy meeting their fans.

I also collect mainly Star Wars. I started off with mostly 8x10s signed at conventions and have only recently begun to go after on card autos at these shows. As for cards, I usually buy 1 to 3 boxes of the new sets when they come out but in no way try to complete the autograph set for that specific card set. I also go through and pick a nice parallel that I feel would look good signed and start from there. It's a great feeling having something signed in person.

Depends, like I collect Star Trek autos. Some series all the mains have nice designed auto cards from the same series in the same design. Others (deep space nine being a big one) don't have that "one killer set" so I piecemeal stuff together. I'm hoping the silver signature tng series with the bridge crew gets completed as I want them but won't buy them if they miss a main character.
By contrast I also collect charmed. Other than wanting the 4 sisters to match I don't care what series I get the autos from. But I don't buy the same character more than once. I do however end up with the same actor more than once at times. I have Anne Hathaway as catwoman for my batman autos and Anne Hathaway as the white queen for my alive in wonderland set.

For star wars, I dont have to complete a set, but I do prefer several autos from the same series versus several series.
I have 5 from Masterworks and want a few more. I will prefer those to any other set since I have 5 and I like them versus other sets. The look of the card matters. Galactic files had terrible autos. Hitek introduced more characters so I have 5 of them, but.....I prefer the same autos from the newest chrome set. That is why I am trying to trade the same exact auto card for ones in chrome. Other actor I choose are based on the shows or series I watched. I have a couple from Mummy returns, and havent gone back to get the other 2 just yet. I have a few odds and ends based on the actor, not the show. Again looks matter too. |

The two shows I really collected to completion were Jericho and Battlestar Galactica.
As for Jericho, I bought a couple cases when they were on sale and got most of the autographs and costumes. Had to buy a couple off ebay and here to finish the set. Then, I started finding all the autos on cards of people from the show from other sets. I've added about 6 8x10's of other cast members who have never signed for any card set. For Battlestar, I bought cases of Premiere, Season 3 and 4. Lots of Boxes of 2. I have a complete set of all the autos and costumes except for the Edward James Olmos card. It drives me crazy, but I can't justify spending the money since I have his auto on two other items. I went to a special BSG convention 3 years ago in Houston, and got to meet a big chunk of the OS and new series cast, hang out with them, have drinks with them, it was awesome. I got a poster signed by everyone who was there. (one of the EJO items). I've pretty much completed my collection of it. For Walking Dead, I've recently started having original pieces of art made to get signed by cast members. I have some of the cards, but will probably unload them to pay for more art. I also recently obtained a signed poster with over 30 signatures (wasn't cheap) that I will be adding to this weekend. What's crazy is, I helped the original owner get some of the autos on it two Walker Stalkers ago, and never thought I'd see it again! |
