Done of you may or may not know I dabble in writing from time to time.
I'm looking to perhaps start making a comic. I intended to write it as a short book first but I'm kinda thinking maybe just to jump straight to comic form. I have started a rough skeleton outline of concept. Working on fleshing things out. Wondered if any artists here would be interested in maybe helping me put some short sample pages together once it gets started. Lemme know. T (Pm for details of story) |

You can usually find some decent up-and-coming artists on Deviant Art. Check under the forums for those advertising their services. Nice way to browse galleries, too.
It's tough to find an artist willing to work on a project without a decent chunk of pay though. I don't know what your financial situation is, but I thought I'd put that out there. Up-and-coming artists are usually around $45-60 per page for pencils, and inkers are around $45-100, depending on the name and their style. Another $30-60 for colorists per page and then about $10 for lettering. You can find some artists who ink their own work for around $80 a page. I also know a decent inker for $10 a page who is up-and-coming, if you're interested. - Sam |

How does it work in comics exactly? Does the writer pay the artist & that's all they get? No royalties? Is there no "labour of love" artists?
I apparently need more info lol |

It really depends.
In my experience, the "labor of love" artists are the ones who are making a comic that they created, often finding a writer to craft that story instead of one that the writer created. If you have your own story that you've written, and you want an artist, you typically have to pay the artist for their time. You can work out the details in terms of royalties and page rates, but for small, independent books you typically pay a flat-rate, per-page rate and that's all. The artist doesn't get anything beyond that. Same with the inker, colorist, etc. Sometimes you can find an artist to collaborate with, usually by offering to write up their story in exchange for them doing a couple of pages for your story. The best way I think to approach it is to find an artist who will give you a great page rate for the sample pages, and then once you get that story funded (Kickstarter, Indiegogo, etc), you pay them a higher rate to finish the remainder of the story. |
