Rob Manfred doesn't seem likable. Something about him makes me feel like he is a weasel.

Not much to add but LeBatard is the only ESPN personality I will listen to. I applaud him in not serving up softball questions to the commissioner of baseball. Dan sometimes seems to be blinded by his love of the city of Miami, but nonetheless he gives a voice to the people of Miami who felt betrayed by this transaction.

I was able to find a longer version, although not the full interview. Manfred makes a lot of sense. His point is that baseball is cyclical. He points out that in the 2012 World Series, the Giants beat Detroit. This year, they’ll pick 1-2 in the draft. In the 2013 draft(which had the order determined by that same 2012 season), the top 5 picks were Houston, Cubs, Colorado, Minnesota, and Cleveland. All 5 of those teams made the playoffs this year.

Like it or not, tear downs and rebuilds are a proven way of winning in baseball. The Marlins have won 2 World Series in recent memory. Rebuilds are no fun but let’s not act like the Marlins haven’t won in a very long time.

My front steps are pretty icy right now, could sure use some LeBatard to fix that.

I'd actually heard it all. I agree, he makes good points.

My statement is more of my overall impression of Manfred, not specifically this situation.

My Rays just traded Longoria, so I am about to feel the very real pain of the rebuild.

Rebuilds can be painful, but they can also (after the pain) bring a new excitement and invigoration.... just ask the White Sox fans

What I haven't seen mentioned is how badly the Marlins fleeced the city. They get the money to build that new stadium and then immediately start to slash payroll and rebuild. I think if team owners are so insistent on getting public funds for their single use stadiums, then the cities should build in that team payroll has to be at a certain level. It's gross what the Marlins did the city of Miami. That stadium will reportedly cost over $1 billion to the city when it's all said and done. Dan has a right to grill Manfred.

Listened to it all at lunch, I don't like LeBatard at all so not surprisingly, I found him very rude and condescending to the MLB Commissioner. Manfred held his ground, backed up by facts, unlike LeBatard who was just spewing anger.

LB came out guns blaring, but Manfred seemed pretty annoyed from the start as well. Kinda something I just wanted to bash my head into a wall the whole time while listening to

Because you don't like Lebatard, it's ok that the commissioner of baseball allowed a clown shown to run a circus with the Marlins in their first handful of decisions and then pretend he wasn't aware that was a possibility?

Really don't want to get into this again...

I don't consider it a "clown show" at all, I agree with what Jeter/Manfred say, which is that this group is committed to winning in the long term. As Jeter said 3 months ago, unpopular moves will be made, but they inherited a failing business, and losing team. Changes must be made, and I have no problem with anything they have done.

If you buy a failing business for 1.2 billion, you can do with it what you want IMO. Why pay 140 million next year to lose and have no fans, when you can pay 80 million and still lose and have no fans?

I will say it again: We weren't winning with that team, and no one was going to the games anyway. Even with Stanton approaching 60 HR's, no one was going to the games. If they ever want to fill any seats, you gotta start winning. If you build it, they will come.

As Manfred said, we can disagree, that's why they make chocolate and vanilla.

It was a great deal for the Marlins but don't make it that they fleeced the city. They have their negotiators at the table and ultimately the politicians made the decision to approve the deal. They could have told Loria to kick rocks, but they didn't. That's on them, not the Marlins.

Good lord the whining. They won't even be the worst team as the Tigers have that locked up.
We have witnessed the death of the concept of deferred gratification.

Manfred is a joke. He is ordering the juicing of balls and is tuning the game with the pitch clock and walk rule. This guy makes Bud Selig look good

Just wondering aloud because I don't know but has either of those markets(MIA/TB) ever supported their teams w/ strong attendance? I know the TB stadium is a dump, Marlins old shed is too. Just wondering when they get new stadiums and they eventually start winning again what will the excuse for poor attendance be then?
A little research shows -
In the last 20 years including a WS crown Marlins have never even averaged 23,000 fans, never better than 12th out of 16 NL teams
The Rays have finished last or next to last in AL attendance in something like 15 out of the last 18 years(during multiple playoff runs)
Not sure baseball will ever be a winner in Florida

At least the White Sox got some huge names. Marlins traded 3 of their best players and I feel like their farm system went from 30th to 29th.

The commissioner mentioned their long term plan and how these new owners have the finances to run the club. Why sell your assets now? Doesn't make any sense. 90% of the free agents are still available. Sell high on these guys in July when teams are desperate and will trade top talent. It really looks like they can't afford the team or have no idea what they're doing.

Le Batard pretty rude of the bat. Then again, Manfred asking for it

Why don't Marlins fans embrace the rebuild?
