Default Mailday: Smoltz, Carpenter, and... Garbage Pail Kids?

First mail day of 2013. Thrilled to have finally paid off my GPK sketch card from Mark Pingitore, one of his keepers.

Fun. Now onto the baseball. A good friend bought me this for Christmas, which arrived today:

Love the look of those blue cards, can't lie. Bought this myself on eBay. Condition was less than satisfactory, but at least I got one:

Finally, my first Chris Carpenter auto. He's a tough signer since he's kind of an ass and also doesn't sign with Topps. /25 for $25? With a relic? I thought this was my best purchase of the three I bought, in terms of money spent (let's just say the GPK cost a lot more and is the showcase of my GPK cards, original artwork notwithstanding) and condition.

Let me know what ya think.

Sweet cards. All autos look very solid.

For that first card, is that an actual auto or is it printed on? I know nothing about those and I can't tell.

It's an on-card auto. Love that set.

Sweet pickups. That sketch is disturbing.

What makes you say Carpenter is an ass? I've never heard that about him before.

Nice Smoltz....I played him in ping pong at a charity event. One of the most competitive guys I've ever met.

Well, we all know of the stories of how overly competitive he is. I've never seen him even acknowledge a single fan at the park (been over a hundred times since we've acquired him) save for one elderly Cubs fan, whom he buddied up with. Pretty strange guy. Point being, he's not necessarily the warmest person to chat with. I call him Anti-Wainwright.

Way cool. I like him in some aspects from what I know of him as a dude, though his religious babble sticks in my craw a bit. How bad did you lose? Haha.

I held my own for awhile but eventually went down 5-3. Several people were waiting so it was first to 5 wins. Even when he was playing against girls he was in it to win...
