All kidding aside, the most noticeable thing to me about his stats are the years where he was only healthy enough to play 5, 4, 6, and 4 games. I don't think he was very talented as a QB, but you gotta feel for the guy when you think about the beatings he took. From what I understand, towards the end, his knees were so bad, he could barely walk up stairs.

PSA claims this is valued at $150k, but that's probably because a PSA 9 hasn't sold on the open market in the past few years (as far as I know). There's no telling what will happen when a bunch of set registry fanatics are bidding against each other, but $150k is absurdly low.

Those are pretty good numbers. Only QB to throw for 4k yards under the old rules. 3 3k seasons. 2 MVPs, SB MVP. Great averages for yards per completion and adjusted net yards per attempt. One of the most difficult quarterbacks to sack. He would rather throw the ball away than take a sack to protect his completion percentage. Would rather complete a 20+ yard pass than a bunch of 5 yard ones. Through age 26, he was one of the greatest QBs of all time, then saw his career ruined by injuries. His career path was similar to that of Gale Sayers.

If his guarantee never came to fruition, he would be an after thought in NFL history. That one moment changed the course of the NFL forever. Hence, he is the Hall of Fame more on Fame than on statistical merit. Until the recent induction of Stabler, I always considered him the weakest of any Super Bowl era QB in the HOF.

Terrell Davis just made the HOF based on 4 year career with 3x Pro Bowl, 3x All Pro, 1x MVP, 1x SB MVP. Why isn't a 5x Pro Bowl, 3x All Pro, 2x MVP a worthy Hofer? |

These cards have had to survive 53 years being oversized (without proper holders and sleeves for them for the overwhelming majority of it) and his Rookie was an SP in the set.
Tallboys are always pretty tough to find in nice condition, finding a 9 of this card might as well be like finding a PSA 10 of Mickey Mantle's rookie. There's effectively none of them out there. Quote:
The Jets defeating the Colts in Super Bowl III was far more of an upset than a lot of the younger NFL fans realize. It would be like an FCS Team walking into Alabama and beating them straight up right now, especially after the Chiefs and Raiders got smacked around by the Packers in Super Bowl I and II respectively. The AFL was a joke in the eyes of a lot of NFL fans, then Super Bowl III shocked all the sports world. Super Bowl IV scared the NFL enough that they made an offer for the AFL to stop being competition (especially after many AFL games were outdrawing a lot of NFL games back east thanks to the predominance of passing in the AFL). To put it this way, how many players on the Jets back in the 1960's and 1970's are in the HOF? There's two: Joe Namath and Don Maynard. Weeb Ewbank is also in, but he was the coach of the Colts when they won the NFL Titles in 1958 and 1959. The only other player I associate strongly with the Jets that is in the HOF is Curtis Martin. The evolution of football started because of guys like Joe Namath and Johnny Unitas. Hardly anyone threw the ball as much as those two did at the time and their paving (along with the high flying AFL) made football what it is today.

Joe helped legitimize the merger with the AFL.
At the time, this meant alot more to the league than any accumulation of stats. Maybe the Hall of Fame should focus more on other memorable and innovative participants- such as offensive and defensive coordinators. |

You can't really judge QB's from that era by today's standards, because the game was very different back then.
#1 - Pass interference for the most part didn't exist....defenders were allowed to be a lot more physical with receivers than they are now. #2 - The "short" game that QB's use nowadays to pad their numbers (i.e. passes to RB's coming out of the backfield) didn't exist back then. #3- Quarterbacks weren't protected like they are nowadays....there was no roughing the QB penalty, and as a result, QB's took a beating. |

Thank all of you that helped put Joe's career in historical context.
No.... he wasn't the GOAT and his numbers don't hold up to today's stars... but he was with little doubt one of the most important players to make an impact on turning the NFL into the powerhouse it is.

I might just buy a PSA 7 Namath and send it in to PSA for a regrade with qualifier so it can gets bumped to a 8 or 9. The way these prices are going, why not?
