Trout Update - Centering good enough?
Picked this up a few weeks ago on COMC. Had COMC do a condition review since I have been getting some less that satisfactory cards lately.
COMC relisted as mint, how accurate do they tend to be? I usually highly scrutinize my stuff before submitting so I am curious to experiences on how thorough they are. First time I have ever used their condition review. Assuming it passes the other tests do you think the centering is close enough to net a PSA 10? I am still on the fence as most of my grading experience is on older or lower end stuff in which I can search out the best centered cards. Curious to opinions because I am debating if I should just try to flip or gamble on getting in hand and seeing if it is good enough to grade. Thanks!

centering is obviously off, L to R. Im gonna go with PSA 9 because of it, but ive seen worse in a PSA 10 holder. this one is close, and will really be up to the grader.
depending on what you paid for it, you still may be able to profit on a PSA 9. people are gobbling these up regardless of condition. |

I'll say PSA 9. I do think PSA considers "value/high-endness"when they determine the final grade. If it's a low end card with a very obtainable 10 pop report, then those 60/40 cards can get the 10. But on a Trout Update, I think you'll see that tendency drop--not vanish, but you'll see more 9's as the likely outcome as opposed to 10's on what looks to be 58/42 centering on this one--assuming everything else is perfect.
I do believe the more cards that are graded, the evolution of the 10 for a particular card will change as more data is collected. Look at the 2017 Judge Topps Archive--rarely 50/50 top/bottom--I bet the first several that were graded were 9's before the graders realized that virtually EVERY Judge was off top/bottom. Now, a 60/40 Judge is a 10 if everything else checks out. With this Trout, 50/50 is certainly achievable so the centering expectation might not be as lenient for newly graded Trout Updates. From the PSA website: I think the Trout would qualify as a card with a good contrast--dark picture/white borders. Quote:

Thanks guys, I am thinking along the same lines. In fact I had started thinking "The fact I am typing this thread should answer my own question".
I have the chance to flip for about a 15% return on COMC so I think I will just do that. I don't want to hold until next season when I imagine there will be other opportunities to buy. If I had more stuff to grade at regular services cost I would probably take the gamble.
