Default Missing Upper deck or no?

Although they still make basketball cards....how many of you guys miss the days of the upper deck/mj dominance with their NBA license...or is pinini doing a decent enough job?

Outside of Lebron and MJ and Simmons I’d say no overall. UD did a lot of things great, but a lot of things bad as well. If UD still had a license, the 90s boom would not have happened to the degree it had and MJ autos would never skyrocketed either.

Was there ever really competition to begin with when there were multiple companies? People still had their loves for certain releases no matter what brand it was from. From all the years of collecting when there was multiple companies, I don't think, at least in my opinion that any company tried to outdo the other. It would be nice to have choices again, but I wouldn't say it had anything to do with competition.

Ok, maybe choices would be a better phrase. I did a lot of low end stuff at the time and enjoyed opening different brands like Topps Total and Fleer Tradition.

I miss Fleer, but I'd personally take Panini over any of the other manufacturers.

Itís a travesty that the GOAT doesnít have any licensed cards.

Itís a travesty that the most dominant player of the last 20 years has zero autographs.

Itís a travesty that the most hyped rookie of the last 15 years doesnít have any autographs or memorabilia.

Your travesties are too broad. MJ does have licensed cards, just not recent ones.

Whoís the most dominant to not have autos? LBJ has licensed autos, just not recent.

Itís been technically 14 years since LeBron was drafted, so 15 years for saying Simmons is a stretch and he has autos, just not licensed.

Yes, competition is always good. The UD e-Pack program would be fun to with a license ,but my wife would probably file for divorce by the end of next year if this was to happen lol

I do miss some of Upper Decks high end cards..........mainly Ultimate and Exquisite in particular with Jordan in them.

I honestly don't know why UD doesn't put out a release once a year like Basketball Exquisite.

You look at how big it would be this year..... You have Jordan, Lebron and Simmons. You go and get 12-15 other legends players to sign (Bird/Magic/Dr J/AI/Penny/Hill/Shaq/D Rob/Ewing etc....even get MJ to somehow convince Charles Barkley to sign - that would guarantee sales.

Wherever you can, you try and get a game worn jersey from each. If UD cant afford this or the jerseys aren't available, then you get each player to wear 10 different jerseys so the patches are at least "Player Worn".....and have plenty of content.

You then make a heap of really nice patch cards/signature cards like the ones below......most of these already look like unlicensed cards anyway (not showing team logos on jerseys etc - just need to remove the NBA team wording off the front of the cards.)

You could have 50 limited logos for MJ x 4...one of each with a different player worn/game worn jersey patch piece on the card

MJ1 Could feature a Bulls Player Worn/Game Worn Home Jersey Patch
MJ2 Could feature a Bulls Player Worn/Game Worn Away Jersey Patch
MJ3 Could feature a Bulls Player Worn/Game Worn Pinstripe Jersey Patch
MJ4 Could feature a Player Worn/Game Worn USA Dream Team Jersey Patch

Etc.

You could do the same with Bron having a heat patch Limited Logos card and Cavs Limited Logos patch cards.

And Simmons could be Rookie year game used patches.

Also If Leaf can put out logoman patch cards......you could do these too.

So many options......and I think they could pull it off......they have the image rights for the players, they can get them to sign......they would just need to design the cards nicely enough to get over the lack of team logos.

If Leaf can do it and make some really nice cards, imagine what UD could do with the access to MJ, Bron and Simmons and some other legends.

Maybe they just don't have the cash to do it? I'm not sure but i reckon they would sell a heap of what i mentioned above if it were made.

I really appreciate the effort put into this post. The pictures also helped convince me that this is a viable idea. Even though I have plenty of player-worn stuff in my collection, I wasn't a big fan of the player-worn stuff for these players in recent Exquisite releases.

Are there any laws that would prevent them from using logos on the cards but not on the patches themselves? I always thought that could be a decent work-around.

In all honesty I think it all comes down to the fact that it's just cheaper for them to limp along and put Simmons autos in packs of cards with manufactured dog patches. Which is a shame...because like I said, you have some wonderful ideas here.

Thanks......I have no doubts that it can be done.

Leaf is already doing this....and has done this for a few years so I believe that UD could do this without any problems.

Now imagine the Hornacek with Lebron/Simmons or Jordan but made by UD.

Yeah I've been watching some of their new stuff and thinking about picking some up. I just wish they all had headshots instead of jerseys. The Iverson stuff looks real nice despite the stickers.
