Default 1951 Bowman Mantle with tape on front PSA?

How will tape on front affect the grade? Will it have a qualifier or just knock it the grade down? I have not purchased this yet but thinking about it. Just trying to gage value. Thanks for the help.

IMHO the authenticity of the card is questionable based on the pic of the back. The wear showing around the corners is too white. If you look at graded examples you will see the exposed wear should be more consistent with the greyish card stock. What you have is very consistent with most reprint examples ive seen. The tape can be added for effect, as that card will command thousands even in that condition, while not being scrutinized as much as people think oh it must be real...it has tape on it.....just my take.

With that said, to answer your question, assuming its an authentic example, I believe the tape would cause it to receive an altered/authentic designation, and not a number grade....atleast with PSA. Not sure how SCG would designate it.

I was just at a show today and was interested in a 1961 fleer Chamberlain rookie that looked sharp, had no flaws other than tape on the front, and it was graded as authentic/altered, so I passed.

Cards with tape residue can grade a 1 at best at PSA. If the tape is still on the card it will come back as Authentic.

Thanks for the comments. I’ve decided that I’m going to pass on this card.

The seller successfully pulled the tape off without damaging the card. Now, I’m 75% sure that I won’t buy it! lol

If a seller sent me pics that tiny of a card that valuable, I would run, not walk, away from it.

Tape residue can get a 2 sometimes, especially if it's on the back.

Default 100%

I have graded over 1000 cards through PSA. This card is 100% authentic. Would grade a 1. Very nice card BTW.

Peace, Mike

I would demand it be graded first with an agreed upon price if it comes back authentic/PSA 1.

This even confirms what I said about an agreement that it be graded FIRST.

you could buy a PSA 1 or nicer presenting authentic for 2000-2500. tape is probably the most undesirable defect on a card.

I agree. I'd rather have a card with a pinhole than tape. Both would be considered a PSA 1 I think.

The Mantle came back a SGC 10. Also had a couple of nice 1955 Topps cards that I sent in with the Mantle. Will post pics when I receive.

So you bough it? I am thinking investing in a 51 mantle, but can't get myself to shell out thousands for an old beat up card.
