oh, i agree with you. i dont see what the hype is about. Can he pitch? Possibly, but MadBum & Kershaw are hobby duds (who both ALSO pitch on the west coast). Can he hit? Possibly

Kershaw has a 800 dollar bowman chrome auto and a 2000 dollar Heritage RC auto.

Sure, but thats about it. Pitchers in this hobby are severely underpriced vs hitters

The Ohtani prices are insane for a guy who will not come remotely close to his hype and more than likely will be a complete bust

[QUOTE=mgugs46;13314057]The Ohtani prices are insane for a guy who will not come remotely close to his hype and more than likely will be a complete bust

Probably not bust. But he would have to be mike trout at these prices or ichiro from 2001

4000 k red auto heritage

Garbage no logo Donruss sticker 500 dollars

Itís shocking.

If he can do anything above average in April

Bowman jumbo boxes might be 350-400

Itís cool if you hit a lottery card

But to me it is ruining start of hobby year for many

Majority are priced out from enjoying a hobby box

The way the last year has went with judge and this

Hard to believe topps wants to sell

They are printing money right now

Never remember anything like this last year

2003 basketball
2012 football

Still think this last year is bigger then both

Thats exactly why they want to sell - potential unsophisticated buyer will see a trend and Topps current ownership has fears

Guys, Ohtani is not a prospect. He's a 23 year old with a championchip and an MVP under his belt. The same things that are driving prices of guys like Mike Trout, Kris Bryant, Bryce Harper...etc are driving the prices of Ohtani. The only difference is his home market (Japan) has 120,000,000 people instead of the 15,000,000 or so that is generally considered a big market by American standards.

is he a pitcher that can hit well? (like MadBum)

or a hitter that can pitch?

i see no way that what he accomplished in Japan can be taken seriously over here when guys that couldnt do much here (Bam Bam anyone?) go over there and flourish

Japan has ~120x more people than San Fran, 30x more than the San Fran metro area, and they take what he did over there very seriously.

what does that have to do with the hobby HERE though?

you want to get his cards and ship them overseas, that's your right. what im asking is what is going to make Johnny Hobby in middle america want to collect him?

Abs-o-freakin-lutely.

The equation of Ohtani’s achievements in Japan with those of guys like Trout, Bryant, and Harper is abjectly preposterous.

But hey, if the denizens of the workd’s largest AA market want to drive up his prices, let them have at it. If his accomplishments in their glorified AA league mean so much to them, they won’t be as disappointed with their exorbitant purchases as American collectors when he washes out over here.

I believe the talent level in Japan is inferior to that of the talent level of MLB, could be why Ohtani is struggling in spring training

Outside of Ichiro, there has not been a Japanese league player come to MLB and have any prolonged success.

Obviously it's great if you're busting Heritage and pull a red auto, because you just paid for your case and some.

However, like Kyle mentioned up thread, it's taking some enjoyment out of the hobby for folks like me who are not in to spending 10k per release to open some product.
