Default ** Official 2018 Shohei Ohtani Thread **

Figured Spring Training opening day is a good day to start a thread for this prospect.

Ohtani will likely make his debut on Saturday vs Milwaukee (per Pedro Moura/Twitter).
MLB network has a bunch of games being televised, but I didnt see this game on their TV schedule..

Other recent blurbs:

--Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Saturday that Shohei Ohtani will be available to both pinch-hit and pinch-run on the days that he isn't starting.
Scioscia noted that normally he would never utilize a starting pitcher as a pinch-runner, but with the club proceeding with just a three-man bench they'll need to utilize Ohtani's versatility. (Feb 17 - 3:03 PM -Source: Mike DiGiovanna on Twitter)

-- Angels manager Mike Scioscia said Tuesday that he plans to employ a six-man rotation in 2018. (Feb 13 - 3:55 PM - Source: Pedro Moura on Twitter)

MLB debut today: Shohei Ohtani surrendered two runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out two over 1 1/3 innings.

Looked alright for his first outing, wonder if the Angels will put him at DH tomorrow or wait for Monday.
I'm guessing how he handles the bat will play a bigger role than his arm in how high his card prices can go this year.
Would be interesting to see the market's reaction if he is absolutely terrible at one skill, but all star caliber for the other.

If he is all-star caliber at hitting, people won't care how he pitches. If he is terrible at hitting, but an all-star pitcher I think it will hurt prices. Yu Darvish that hits like Shinjo isn't very exciting.

If he has a realistic chance to be an all-star at anything, it’s pitching. From what I’ve heard, there are probably lots of guys in AA as good or better than him at the plate and in the field. The hitting thing is an appeasement sideshow to placate him until a team has him under a long term deal. Then he’s a pitcher, if anything.

The guy is likely not going to be anything earth-shattering in any dimension. Certainly not anything to come close to justifying the hype. Solid pitcher for several years, maybe. At best.

Instead of 'Japan's Babe Ruth' maybe they meant 'Japan's Travis Wood'.

L o l

Although I will always have a soft spot for TW, I’m going to give Ohtani the decided benefit of the doubt in that comparison for now.

But in terms of a pitcher with some pop in the bat, I’d much rather have America’s MadBum (at least pre-dirtbiking injury).

Topps Now card is available to commemorate his uneven debut.
Any guesses on the print run?

I wonder how that will hold value in the long run. It will be of his first MLB perfomance and his first card of him playing in an MLB uniform but it's depicting a game in which he did poorly and isn't pack inserted.

Given the ginormous print run it will likely have relative to many other Topps Now cards, probably not the greatest intermediate term value prospects.

So this may be a stupid question but how on earth is Topps making ohtani rc’s BEFORE opening day? Not trying to hijack this thread or anything but just seems like the whole Rc shield is a scam by Topps? Maybe doesn’t actually require it as we’ve been told for years?

Potential is here for much egg on many faces.

Collectors fell in love with the RC Logo when it became a pure money grab.

I get the high $$ draw but I thought it was an mlbpa rule? Isnít this why we have seperate bowman prospect sets as well?

yep...ridiculous...we get call up cards for dudes actually playing in a reg game...and their rookie status is actually gone for the next year(devers ,rosario) yet rc cards galore for them this year. Ohtani could blow out his arm this week, be out for a year, never appeared in a reg game and have rcs? lol

I saw an article today (link below) that talked about how his test/evaluation includes plans for rest (not allowed to swing a bat) on the days before and after he pitches.
So, if that carries over into the regular season, with a 6 pitcher rotation, that would mean he would only have ABs for about half of the 162 games.
That will be appx 250 plate appearances (give or take 50 or so?), with a few pinch hitting opportunities here and there.

Too bad Trout's not in there for lineup protection today!
Would be funny if the opposing pitcher trolls and intentionally walks Ohtani every time he's up.

Topps Now Ohtani pitching debut is closed.

On deck for tomorrow: Topps Now Ohtani batting debut.
