I may be in the minority here, but I think think the non-collecting public has heard of a T206 Wagner in some time. I don't think it holds up as as iconic as a 52 Mantle or a 89 Griffey, 84 Donnie Baseball.

It's been what, 25 years since the last crazy Wagner auction? Maybe among collectors of a certain age, but I don't see it as iconic.

yea, going to disagree

"i found an old baseball card"

"was it a wagner?" is what most non card folks would ask

The Wagner and the Mantle make it into newspaper articles that aren't on the sports pages. For a brief period of time, the Ripken did. The others don't.

Who reads a newspaper these days? Guess what was one of the top stories on Yahoo.com couple months ago? It was Brady's rookie card selling for an astronomical price.

2016. You must be living under a rock. The t206 Wagner is the only card the general public cares about. It sells for a half million dollars in poor condition. The most faked card on ebay is the Wagner because scammers hope a fool will give them a few thousand to make 500k or more.

No one cares about a 10.00 Mattingly or a 20.00 Griffey unless they were in the hobby. The Mantle gets some publicity, but it gets no where near the publicity of the Wagner, has no where near the value or name recognition. For modern cards, the Fleer Jordan is the only card that comes close to having any name recognition to the general public.

Say what? Nowhere near the "name recognition?" Who gets to define that term? You?

Please.

People out there know the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle just as much as they do the Wagner.

The Mantle actually being relatively attainable for many contributes to its popularity. The consistent sales of 8s in the mid six figures, the 8.5 for over a million, and the imminent 9 sale for over a million will only continue to fuel its popularity.

And as they say, popularity breeds contempt— your anti-Mantle posts are Exhibit A of that phenomenon.

Above all, cards aren't in competition against one another, as if it is some heavyweight bout. A 1952 Mantle cannot fight a T206 Wagner, LOL. They're both great cards and to try and put one down only looks like sour grapes.

Tantrums? Please. Don't conflate me calling you out for trying to pass subjective bile off as fact with actually being upset.

1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey Jr. and 1989 Fleer Billy Ripken are probably my picks as far as cards that have transcended the hobby - amazing for a pair of junk wax cards.

My sister knows absolutely nothing about cards. If I were to guess, the only card I think she would know is the 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan.

Michael Jordan was and is iconic. Even people in 3rd world countries (that don’t own a television) would know Michael Jordan.
