Default Today I Learned: Blowout Edition

Post one thing, no matter how insignificant, that you learned today.

Today I learned that eating kiwis with the fur still on is life-changing.

So much easier to eat.

I also learned today that inedia is the belief (usually supernatural or related to miracles) that it is possible to live without consuming food. Several saints supposedly went months or years without eating or without eating anything aside from the Eucharist.

Not really today, but some things I've read up on recently are:

- The relic cards that we like to collect can be traced back to the massive collections of religious relics owned by the Church and various princes. In fact, forgiveness for sins and reduced time in purgatory could be earned simply by gazing on certain relics. One collection in Wittenberg could grant a viewers up to 14 million days worth of indulgences.

- The collecting of autographs dates back to ancient Greece with the preservation of original philosophical manuscripts and valuable libraries worth of collections.

- The idea of a "hall of fame" is directly descended from the Norse concept of Valhalla with Odin's mightiest warrior living forever (until Ragnarok at least) in a great feasting hall surrounded by the trophies and mounts of their greatest victories.

So basically, everything we love about the hobby ties back to either Christianity, paganism, or secular philosophy. I think that's pretty awesome.

More recently many of those same things tie back to the Nazi Occult Practices.

Today I learned that Teddy Roosevelt supported a plan to import hippos into America and release them in the Louisiana swamps. The idea was that they would eat up some specific plants that were killing off valuable fish and in turn could be ranched and processed into "lake cow bacon" to remedy the meat shortage of 1901.

The Crazy, Ingenious Plan to Bring Hippopotamus Ranching to America
