The artist have said on her instagram that her aim is not to make sketches of players "looking exactly as they are", but to express them with their character and atmosphere.
So I guess Rafael Devers appears jolly in the pic so let's add 40 pounds!

I think Topps will take the temperature each week and decide release accordingly. If it's a monster PR week, they dump some scrubs. If PR's are trending down, they'll toss out something different. Last week was probably a little flat, so the drop a HOF/RC week. I'm sure they are still working out their strategy. It's only been 10 weeks.

They totally blew a perfect opportunity for Pete Rose this week IMO.

Also -- it kinda sucks that SB was not a stat on the 1953 cards. It's a shame Rickey's card doesn't have a SB stat -- even though they did mention it in the text.

Bonds will look like Griffey from the Simpsons Homer at the Bat episode.

Looks that way.
It appears there may be 3 tiers at toppsHQ:
Level 1: [Super] Star/RC/HOF-retired
Level 2: [Regular] Star/Rookie/HOF-retired
Level 3: Scrub

Combos we've seen so far:
L1+L3+L3
L2+L2+L3

So the Devers is a caricature? Well that is not what I was buying with the others. I'm thinking we will have 1991 Donruss like toons soon enough.

He hit an opposite field hr over the monster the other day. He could barely run around the bases. We are lucky she didnít show his bottom half.

Wouldn't this week be a L1+L1+L3 or at the very least L1+L2+L3?

Now that I look at the Henderson I'm not as fond of it...was I just blinded by the newness of the set to miss the caricature nature of the art?

Yes absolutely it could.
Especially if we believe that topps felt that needed a boost for this week.

Devers is not really a "slim" player.
His face seems to puff up a bit when he laughs as well, and this is also a shot of him from a lower angle...

Below pic is just an example...
Devers chin

Remember, sketches are basically meant to look alike, but it is a form of artwork and artists will add bit of their own touch.
If many don't like it, then I guess it is just not perceived as a "good artwork", but I personally don't think it is that bad.
And not to offend Devers or anything, I think his face does look caricuture-like than some other players in MLB.

It’s not a caricature—she’s just saying that so she doesn’t have to entertain every OCD baseball purist sending her art criticism. Her style is clearly realism, but the likeness will be influenced by her choice of reference material.

Okay looking back the Ramirez is kind of a caricature too...but the others were more art and why I liked the set. I have to say the Henderson and Devers are more caricature's and easy passes for me (I mean I will get one for my set) but yup it's...Back to the Topps Now thread for me.

The devers is an odd look for sure

I don't know. I kind of like the Devers card. It shows his giddy nature after he throws the ball 10 ft. over Hanley's head to try and throw a runner out at 1st.

The back of Devers' card states that he hit 63 hrs last year.

I get it but to me if I look back at them all the Ramirez felt off to me and I only bought a few...I will be passing on the two except for enough to keep my set going as I just don't like the cartooney feel of them. Maybe I am being over critical...but I can just don't like the card. Normally I'm all excited...not today. The Henderson may grow on me after a week.

That Rickey card is awesome, he's signing at The National as well if anyone is going to that. Devers is funny, but I like it. Super stoked to see PR from last week... I think people may have slept on the only Ichiro Mariners version we're gonna get...
