Default Beckett clueless on centering yet again (2018 Prizm FB edition)

This years 2018 Prizm Football is weird when it comes to centering.

First off, the border design nearly hits the edge of the card. This creates a major problem. If you look at the border as that very very thin area on the top, left, and right, then most of these cards are severely off centered. I'm guessing most people would look at this card and see the borders as the outline of the photograph, where the lines and dots start. Anyhow, this is a nearly perfectly centered Baker.

Most, if not all Lamar Jackson Silvers look like this:

Notice the left border is much larger than the right border. The card is roughly 60/40 centering on the front right to left if counting the border as the area surrounding the photo, and nearly 50/50 top to bottom.

But, if you were to look at this Lamar Jackson and count the border as the very thin area left on the sides, all Lamar Jackson Silver cards would be nearly 100/0 left to right.

Sadly, most if not all Lamar Jackson Silvers are this way, and a few other players have their Silvers severely mis cut. 60/40 on every copy, with even a little more negative eye appeal thrown on top is sad..

But the reason I'm making this post is... what on earth is going on here?

This Lamar is nearly dead centered, and still received a 9 centering???

I know BGS will correct this if they wound up reading this post, but its sad things like this need to get pointed out to them.

This Lamar has nearly perfect centering all around. I'm guessing the top border has just has a little "thin area" on the top, which is what this card is supposed to have. You can see from the 2nd photo how the area surrounding the photograph is nearly the perfect size all around.

Just a shame that graders have zero idea what they are doing now. I saw rogermaris say yesterday that he was teaching PSA how to spot fakes. Thank god for that. Whatever it means anyways. I am guessing it is more than he showed them where they were wrong all along and now they simply know to look for it. Happened with 2003/04 Bowman Chrome Dwyane Wade Autos with me, that all had a manufacturing pin dot on the card so they all received BGS 8.5 surfaces, but it wasn't even a pin dot it was a period as part of the design. The stupid company needed to be alerted to things like that then, and all the more so now.

Anyways, this is a long post for a Lamar Jackson card, but it's sad someone actually paid for that opinion.

I judge l/r centering based off those little dots. The Mayfield looks good l/r while the Jackson is terrible l/r imo.

You're in the 60/40 Lamar Jackson camp or the 100/0 camp (the Silver that is)?

Topps is up to the same shenanigans with their designs, they aren't clueless, they are trying to make centering harder to figure out so they get less requests for replacements for miscuts.

Jackson should have been a 9.5 centering. I measured 53/47 L/R and the top measures the average of the L and R borders.

Either a 9.5 or a 10. But a 9? LOL

Lamar

Look at the Squares.... two and almost a half on the left side... not even two squares on the right. How is that centered?

I looked at the squares and then used the line and then used the purple as the borders, I agree with you. It's never equal on that card, centering looks like a 9. Even with an eye test I could tell it's not "perfect"

Not surprising. Graders spend maybe 60 seconds grading and look at hundreds of cards a day. It's an opinion and they get things wrong on a regular basis. Grading is a scam.

OP, you do realize sports cards also have a back right? I know you are anti-BGS and PSA is perfect, but please do not conveniently forget to post backs of cards while trying to hammer home your point to people. thanks

I just received 2 Darnold silvers back from Beckett.

One came back BGS 9 with 9 centering, the other came back with BGS 9.5 with 9.5 centering.

I attached the pictures for comparison. The L/R on front of the 9.5 is noticeably better (obviously).

Is the expectation that like the BGS has a weekly morning meeting where they discuss the centering on new releases and how they’ll handle it? That seems pretty quaint imo, they just want our money, it’s fine

BGS uses a little wheel that they spin to decide centering, like the Wheel of Fortune wheel, with numbers on it... , 8.5, 9, 9.5, 10

That would take too long and they thousands of cards to grade thanks to those that buy into the perceived value of a BGS graded card. It's quicker just to pull a number out of hat versus waiting for the spinner to stop.

Yes, it does make sense. Darnold Silvers are mis cut L/R just like the Lamar Jackson Silvers (except not as bad, some turned out nicely). Very lucky grade with the 9.5 centering.

A few BGS 10's hit eBay today.. Funny seeing those grades. None make any sense.

Yeah, thats why I didn't post a photo of the back. Because the nearly 50/50 centered front, got a 9 grade because the back of the card was so off centered... btw fixed it for you.

9.5

Can we all just say it’s a 10 centering?
It’s still not going to change to overall final grade of 9.5

Probably one of the biggest overreaction threads ever. That Lamar 9.5 clearly is o/c left to right, as others have pointed out. Like, it's obvious. The 9 on centering is a solid grade. Strange thread.
