Default Edwin Diaz on track for single season saves record

As of this morning, Edwin Diaz has 46 saves so far this season. The record for most saves in a season is 62, set by Francisco Rodriguez in 2008. There are 44 more games for the Mariners to play in. Extrapolating his save rate (46 saves / 120 games Mariners have played so far) and applying that to the 44 remaining games, means that Diaz will end up with 63 saves for the season. This should get interesting as the Mariners could be in a fight for a wild card position, so they definitely will be using Diaz to close out games.

I'm just curious as to if others think he will break the record.

I don’t know about the record but it has to be one of the most dominant seasons ever for a RP and Hader has been just as good

I don't think so. The Mariners are gonna slump their way to the end of the season while the A's take over.

That is blasphemy! We get Cano back in the lineup today!

Iím a Mariners fan and I think they will choke it away like the last 17 years straight. Started off well but the last month has been terrible. Aside from sweeping the Astros last weekend, the Aís are looking pretty unbeatable right now.

Getting Cano back will be nice but I question if it will be enough. I think he misses the saves record but he has had a hell of a year regardless. Iím pulling for him but Iím not holding my breath. Go Mís!

I have my doubts because history tells me the Mariners fade down the stretch. Nevertheless, I still voted yes

That is just a ridiculous record. I had K-Rod on my fantasy team that year and he scored more than a lot of my starters. There's just too many variables -- they have to win enough games, but only by a couple runs. I don't see it happening, but I'll root for him. It would be a pretty amazing accomplishment.

He did just save all 4 of a four game series, so at that pace he could reach 80.

The M's don't score many runs, so when they do win it's usually close. Their record is something like 44-18 in games decided by 2 runs or less, and I think something like 26 of Diaz's saves were 1-run saves.

After saying all that... I agree with you that he will fall short. They have been running him into the ground so I think they will ease up on his usage a bit. My guess would be maybe 56-59 or so.

Yeah, it's kind of the HRs of pitching stats.

As the Kenley-less-Dodgers fans nod in agreement.

I don't think they're laughing, though.

You and me both. Escobar breaking the doubles record doesn't seem like it will come to fruition so we can start rooting for Diaz as well

Adam Plutko got a save while throwing 70 pitches in a 17-4 win earlier this year. Saves are a ridiculous stat, but it would be cool to see Diaz get the record.

I don't think Edwin Diaz has too many saves from going 3 innings in a blowout game.

"Closer" is by far the most overrated position in all of baseball. Most come into a clean half inning get three outs and get a "save" when in fact, the fate of the game hinged a few innings earlier when the starter or a middle reliever worked out of a jam with runners on.

Again, tell that to a talented team that plays well for 8 innings and loses the game because of a shaky closer, or no closer at all.

I remember the Giants were a team that stood out a few years ago. 2016 maybe? Crazy amount of blown saves.

Closer is a position that's taken for granted. When a guy's good, it's all gravy. When you've got a guy blowing games, it stands out like a sore thumb.

Oh, I know. I'm just pointing out some of the intricacies(?) of the save calculation.

I've been glad to see the Indians go away from the trend of having a closer and instead using their best pitchers in the most crucial situations.

I'm just happy that Jack Z is no longer in charge. It's nice to see a plan come together for a young pitcher and not the back and forth like the previous regime i.e. Brandon Morrow.

Crazy to think he is already at 99 saves and only 30 back from being the Mariners all time leader. Just turning 24 and only being in the majors 175 games and only 30 saves back.

FINALLY we got a closer!!!

daveyc1 needs to go into the Dodgers team thread and explain to their fans how overrated the closer is.
