Default 51 Bowman Mantle

I don't buy vintage so I am not sure the prices on ebay are inflated. What is a fair price for a PSA 4.5 51 Bowman Mantle?

Thanks

$8300 +/- $1000 depending on eye appeal

51B Mantle - throw VCP out the window imo

there will be a big premium if centered with eye appeal

The last 2 sales have been a well centered one by PWCC for 8k and a perfectly centered one from another seller for 7.5k. Getting a half grade is generally going to mean the card is centered with good eye appeal.

Both of the last two sales of a PSA 4.5 from VCP were indeed well centered (with the 2/16/18 sale example having very rare centering for this card)— yet both cards had the dreaded vertical print lines.

If one is seeking an example with that same centering and no print lines, it will be both hard to find and well north of what the print-lined examples commanded.

As an additional reference point, the last dead centered PSA 4, which did not have the print lines, sold for $10,400 in Feb 2018. Thus I would agree with Neal and DaddyMC's assessments, with 10k+ being the ballpark for a super strong 4.5. The price should drop much closer to the average if the card has more standard eye appeal. Hope that helps. Best of luck if hunting for one, it is a fun and challenging card to shop for and rewarding when the right one pops up.

i would be wiling to pay a 30% +/- premium for a centered and cleanly registered 4.5 over comps and would suggest either finding such a card or seek a card with these attributes in a lower grade. these features will separate and drive future demand of early mantle cards. good luck whatever you decide to do.

It's always a very personal choice, yet for my own taste I would pass and seek an example with better image focus/registration and no vertical print line. The centering is certainly above average on that example, yet when Mantle's image/face/NY cap logo is focused and unblemished as the card maker intended, it makes a huge difference in the overall eye appeal.

So in my own collecting, if the choice was between that 4.5 at the average price, or paying even more for a 4 with the same or better centering, better image quality, and perhaps some more corner wear, I would personally go the latter route. In fact a while back I parted ways with a 5 because a much lower graded card I had found was the better looking card in person.

Rainmaker's astute post above is absolutely spot-on, in terms of how certain key eye appeal attributes of specific cards and their rarity are known to collectors and therefore highly desirable; collectors/buyers in turn are parsing eye appeal from technical grade more and more these days. To Rainmaker's point, pictured below is the one that finally halted my long search; happily paid a record for the 4-grade that was north of PSA 5 average price.

As another interesting quantification of just how much of a premium the best looking examples command over their more average-looking counterparts, one can see that in the PSA 5 grade, the last really outstanding PSA 5 example to hit the auction block cost $19,000 on 6/7/17. Since then, one touched the 15k level and a few have hit the 12k zone, while the others have traded hands in the 10k zone. Another very strong 5 went privately for around what the 19k example likely netted its owner. So there is quite the percentage premium when a specimen exhibits the combination of rare centering and eye appeal.

the vertical line and registration hurts the appeal of that one. centering is nice to be sure but other than that it leaves plenty to be desired.

if you are simply seeking to get a 51 bowman and the price is right then only you can decide if its the card for you.
