If Brett Gardner and his $13 million salary are to be part of a Stanton trade, he can’t stop it. He’s about a half-season from having 10-5 rights. Jacoby Ellsbury has a full no-trade clause, however.

I don't care what the situation is, the optics of Jeter trading Stanton to the Yankees is insanity.

On the other hand, in 2019 can you imagine this lineup (fantasyland of course since 1 or 2 will likely get traded now, but still):
CF Gardner
3B Machado
RF Harper
DH Stanton
2B Gregorius
C Sanchez
LF C Frazier
1B Bird
SS Torres
Castro as a utility guy. T Frazier as a PH. Judge as a 4th OFer.

Marlins are in a terrible position. No one wants to take on money the year before FA armageddon hits. This is the absolute worst possible year to try and salary dump anything.

And the marlins can’t trade dollar for dollar. They have got to cut payroll.

As I understand it, they only need to get under the cap this year and then the clock resets. Agone+Puig still nets them a cost savings. Also, they dropped Crawford $22M off their payroll after 2017. I'm going off memory here... there is about another $15M coming off the books this year and next as well. I think the numbers are pretty close.

Don’t get me wrong I hate the Yankees but I’ve thought all along the Yankees by far make the most sense out of any team. They have the need money and prospects and a big market to woo a younger player.

Way it was described to me is #Yankees were not heavily interested in Stanton, but if #Marlins have no place else to turn, have to move as much of his $ as possible and do deal to keep NYY in line to be under ’18 luxury tax threshold, how can they ignore his talent?

yankees have tried to foist ellsbury on miami as an offset, but marlins are not agreeing to that one. castro or headley are seen as more likely at this point. they are working on it.
