Here's my site with all of my vintage set needs:
https://hughescards.weebly.com

Love these threads as well. Like to see what people are working on. Seems around here, there isn't much love for vintage as there's very few threads in the vintage BST. I've pinned it down to 2 things: a.) people would rather buy shiny new stuff that has a chance to go up and make a profit (prospecting is what we call it ) instead of spending their money on HOFers that will never decrease unlike their "can't miss prospect"; or b.) people that collect vintage tend to hoard it. In other words, they don't want to sell or trade it.

I've had a hard time on on here and SCF and to some extent Net54 making trades to pick up new vintage cards. Seems very few people trade any more and people only want to sell. All that said, it's been a slow process getting into vintage. I made the move from modern in August and have since sold all of my modern stuff to focus on vintage with the exception of my couple of PCs, which will be going soon.

So here's how I'm doing and what I'm currently working on.

I've got about 210 different 1962 Topps and have a lot of 60ish more coming in some time this week. I am up to having spent a whopping $42 on it, even though it's in VG-Ex to Ex type condition.

I"m also working on 1974 Topps and 1971 Topps baseball. I've got roughly 360 different cards from 1971 Topps and am down to needing about 50 or so from 74 (I had the entire set about a month ago but decided to do some upgrades, so tossed all the cards that needed upgrading).

I was contemplating doing some football sets (1960T, 1970T, 1971T) but decided against those for now. Don't want to spread myself too thing. My problem is I'll work on something for a while and get burned out on it. Happened with my 57 BB set, my 61 BB set and my 60 and 61 football sets I once had. I just got to the point where I was tired of working on them so just sold what I had. Now I regret it.

I felt the same way about my 62 set a few weeks ago. But instead of selling it, I just decided to put it in the closet for the time being. Then a couple weeks later I found someone selling a big lot for a good price. So I bought them, haha.

Anyway, my goal is to continue building my collection slowly through buying lots and then trading off extras. For example, I'm about to list about 75 extra 71s that I have. Also, I want to just keep chipping away at the sets I'm working on right now.

I'm pretty much just trying to get all the cool cards that I couldn't afford when I was a kid. Hank Aaron RC, Nolan Ryan RC, all the hot junk wax RCs in PSA 10 (1989 UD Griffey, Gwynn, Boggs, Mattingly, Puckett, etc).

My favorite player growing up was Harold Baines, so I'm also working on acquiring PSA 9+ of all the Baines base cards. Thankfully, this is not an expensive task. LOL.

Have the crazy notion recently to repurchase the Topps 35th anniversary book that I had back in 1985;
https://www.ebay.com/itm/TOPPS-35-ye...cAAOSwq1JZEp5h

Used to love going through the pages to look at all the photography over the years and dream the kid dream of "if I could have one card on this page it would be....". Not necessarily the most expensive card, but just the coolest card on the page.

Been thinking about rehashing that idea and going for PSA cards on a rising scale (1950s = 5 or better, 1960s = 6 or better, etc.) on a "best per page" basis.

I really like your website - its nice and clean. Why the focus on Tyrell Jenkins? As a Braves fan I really liked him too as he was coming through the minors.

Thanks on the website. I put a lot of hard work into it and am always changing where I have thing, what's on there, etc.
As for the Tyrell stuff, I've known he and his family since he was 7 and watched him grow up. They've always treated me and my wife like we were part of the family.

If you are on FB, there are a lot of good buying/trading vintage pages.

Me - just finishing up a 1959 topps baseball set.

As I said on another thread, I hear nothing but scam stories coming out of Facebook dealings. That's why I've never dealt on there. Plus, none of my friends or the people on my friends list collect.

I use to have goals like set building....and then I discovered ways to buy up vintage lots from old guys looking to build up their retirement funds and I never know what I'm going to get in them, haha.

It's an amazing hobby but now my collection is all over the place. I still want a completed 1951 Bowman PSA set by 2025 and I did finally pick up a Yogi Berra this week for it. It has mainly been commons up until this point.

At least I'm still PC'ing every single Red Sox vintage card I can get my hands on, I don't even care about the shape of them at this point.

Like bensie I am finding joy in getting the cards I wanted so bad as a kid...brett rc, young rc, schmidt rc, Ryan rc, unitas rc, jim brown rc ... they don't have to be gem or anything and the better the deal the happier I am. I managed to knock those out now I hope to add a banks, koufax, clemente, Layne and starr rc this year. I also finished my 71 and 76 football sets this last year and hope to finish my 67 football set and get a good start on a 56 topps set. The best part is picking up a
Good deal on a HOFer card I like. My on going project is a rc of any baseball or football HOFer .

I am working on my Chief Bender set and finishing my Clemente, Stargell & Maz Basic sets.

My crazy goal for this year is a 1968 3D Clemente and a T214 Victory Chief Bender

Interesting stuff wharfrat.
I am not a set collector, and my collecting is narrow and limited at best.

Its hard to believe over a year has passed since I originally made this thread.
My collecting has changed a little, but not drastically.

I am mostly collecting Mickey Mantle , Roberto Clemente (other big names, Mays, Aaron etc.)
I will eventually branch out a little, but for now the above selections will keep my occupied.

Its proven to be a real challenge getting nicely centered Mantle cards, they are just snapped up so quickly on Ebay. But the few I have, I am extremely happy with.
I will continue on my Clemente project. (basic Topps run with a few other goodies thrown in)

But I have slightly changed my goals for 2018.
I alluded to this in the Nationals section/thread.
For 2018, my goal currently is to get a strong eye-appeal Roberto Clemente rookie....hopefully in a PSA 5 or 6 if I can find one I am happy with at the price level I can work with.
Part of that goal, is to attend the National in August, and that is likely where I will attempt to snag that Clemente, if I can find one I am happy with.
I will also undoubtedly pick up a few other goodies, so I have already begun to start saving for that trip.

Looking forward to hearing other's thoughts as the Nationals appear on the horizon.

I'm working on a raw 1971 Topps set, down to 200 cards needed. Only started 4 months ago, so it's been a pretty quick thing to get my hands on. Always looking for more!

Started out this year trying to finish my 1980s run of topps/Fleer& Donruss. But lately making some real progress with 1975-1980 Topps Baseball sets, all raw 77-80 NM and 75-76 VG-EX.

1980=98% plan on finishing soon
1979=90% plan on finishing but the end of the year
1978=92% plan on finishing before June
1977=96% not sure about this one, have not had luck finding cards that I liked for my budget, but did add a couple this past month.
1975-1976 just adding cards when I see deals on lots, not in any hurry at the moment.

If I had goals I would have been successful.

With that being said, Mainly going after Vintage Mantle and any other vintage HOFer that's affordable .

Grabbing those two things at the end *is* a goal and a very smart one at that. Don't be so hard on yourself, man.
