Yes I'm trying to polish off her key books this year, except for BA12. I was so bummed... I've been looking out for 9.4 slabs and a Mad Love first print 9.4 sold for $75 the other day. Oh well. I got a good price on those raws, and the B:HQ is a first print. They are both 9.0-9.4 range.

I have a stack of these set aside hopefully to be signed by Campbell, Connor and Palmiotti at NYCC this year (just didn't have the funds last year). Now I guess that is unnecessary since I snagged these 5x SS off ebay. Thought I got a great price, plus I paid a good chunk of it with ebay bucks

And that Black Cat sketch I got from Artgerm at NYCC last year... Finally got it colored (digitally... sort of) by one of my favorite "noname" artists. I felt she was a great fit for his style. Thoughts?

Thanks guys. I'm really pleased with how the Artgerm colored piece turned out. I didn't have the heart to touch the original. I'm probably going to frame a print of the original along side the colored version, and keep the actual originals tucked away in a safe environment

Smile East Coast Comic Con

Went to East Coast Comic Con this weekend. Was really excited to go to my first comic show of the year.

Got some books signed...

Bought some books off the wall...

Founds some good deals in boxes...

Also sent two orders to CGC - a 25 book minimum 9.8 submission and 12 Jusko SS submission with pressing. CGC was not at the show, which was really surprising and almost prevented me from dropping off my blue label order. There were 2 authorized CGC dealers at the show that could witness signings. One of them refused to accept my blue label order because they wanted me to use their account and essentially pay double. The other one, Desert Wind, said they would include it with the SS shipment at the end of the weekend if I gave them $10 for shipping. Cheaper than a flat rate box, so I agreed. Then came the trickier part... They witnessed my Jusko signing, but if I submitted under my CGC account I had to pay and extra $10/book witnessing fee. If I submitted under their account, there was no fee because CGC pays them. Well, I decided to give up being able the track the invoice from my account in order to save $120. Desert Wind people were nice, but I'd rather deal with CGC directly.

The Campbell wall books all fill holes in my collection. I need to take a good look at them to see if any are solid 9.8 SS contenders for NYCC. The Batman & Spider-Man book is one that I've been after for a while. Hadn't seen many in the wild before this weekend, but there were at least 5 or 6 on walls at the show.

Unfortunately forgot to bring my extra slabs to see if I could work out any trades or sales with the dealers

Thank you, gentlemen. I thought the show was busier than last year, but I overheard quite a few of the dealers complaining it was a lot slower than last year. The box diving was tough, but I managed to find a few gems. Left a few random Hughes Catwoman covers behind. Decided to go back for them but couldn't remember where I had left them. They were in a $1 box somewhere, but I don't think they were in great shape anyway (and none of the really popular covers either). Wall books were all over the place, from ridiculous to just below ebay.

I had really wanted to get another GPK jam piece done at this show, but Tom Bunk cancelled and Andy Warhola wasn't sketching. That was kind of an early bummer, but I tried to make the most of it. Also disappointed there wasn't much OA. George Perez also cancelled. There were a handful of great creators there though, so I'm sure quite a few people got to meet thier heroes. I probably would have gotten more stuff signed and maybe a few sketch covers if CGC was actually there. Desert Wind was not bad to work through, but it just wasn't as seamless as when CGC has a booth.

A recent purchase. The only Harley Quinn "key" I don't have in Near Mint or better condition is a Batman Adventures 12.

Also did an amateur frame job on my Artgerm commission and hung it in the hallway outside of my office/man cave/comic room.

And I think I saw something like this posted here on the boards not to long ago. Anyway, I liked the idea and made some spine inserts for the comic-folio storage boxes that I'm keeping some of my raw JSC books in. I'm not a graphic artist by any means, but I'm pretty happy with the way they turned out.

I can share the image file if anybody is interested. Its a hefty 10mb file, but I guess I could shrink it down without hurting the print quality.

Nice framing job and I like the look of those spine labels!

With digital coloring, does that basically mean that you've got the original sketch (the one in the middle), and then the other two are prints of the work done on the computer by the artist who you asked to color it? Just curious, as I'm not familiar with how that works.

Actually, nothing that is in that frame is "original"

The original pieces are in a portfolio binder in the closet, where they receive ZERO exposure to light. Of course they can be easily viewed anytime.

In the center is a 1:1 print of the original commisson. Its a print from the scan I made of the original file to send to the artist that did the color. She printed it on toned sketch paper and then penciled over the image with various levels of shading. She then digitized that image and colored it. Its actually similar to Artgerm's process where he lays down flat colors with Copic markers and then finishes the coloring digitally. I also have the original pencil piece tucked away in the same portfolio. Since this is a cheap MDF/plexiglass frame I bought off Amazon, I didn't want to risk the originals exposure to UV or acid. When I move out of an apartment and into a house, I may have the set professionally framed with museum archival materials for display. Until then, frankly you can't tell the difference

Interesting... thanks for the insight into the process!

And I hadn't thought of it, but of course it makes sense that you'd want to keep the original out of the sun. But clearly I couldn't tell that it wasn't the original in the frame!

I really like the pencils on the toned paper. Really great shading which adds just the right amount of detail and depth to the piece.

Smile The slabs are here!

As mentioned, 19 of the 25 books I submitted to CGC in a 9.8 minimum grade order were accepted, and just 6 rejected. I was pretty pleased with those numbers in generally, but bummed about a few of the books that didn't hit 9.8. That's life though, right?

Some new editions to the personal collection

First up, we have the 4th FanExpo/MegaCon reprinting of Batman Adventures 12. Its my least favorite of the bunch, and has been advertised as the last. The only ones that I'm missing are the Timm (3rd printing) virgin variants. Not worth the up-charge in my opinion. Really happy to add these to my HQ PC, although I wouldn't mind having a real BA12 9.8 (or even a 9.4) as the centerpiece of that collection!

Campbell variants of Red Sonja v4 #s 2 and 3. For the life of me, I don't know why I didn't include #1 in this order? Anyway, I was happy these hit 9.8. Wasn't willing to splurge on the virgin variants, although I think they would like very nice in SS. Even if I had them, I wouldn't have included them in this grading order.

Up next is the Jessica Jones Decomixado/La Mole exclusive. I'm not sure how limited this is, but I haven't seen a ton of slabs so it makes a nice entry into the collection. The True Believers reprint is just such a classic cover, it will make a nice display. Total out-of-pocket cost was just under $20 Even if you throw in all 10 copies I purchases and the added fees for the other one that didn't hit 9.8, its still under $40. Bummer the other submitted copy didn't hit 9.8 though, as I was hoping to give it away on this forum.

Here is a sweet Black Cat profile sketch I was able to get, but wasn't able to submit for SS at the time. Really like the way it turned out and wanted to protect and display it, so I decided to include it in this minimum grade submission as an experiment. Will they include a qualified grade in the order? Will I absolutely hate the green label? Figured, worst case, it hits 9.8 but I hate the green label to I bust it out and that's $20ish in the toilet. Not a huge loss.

Now here is where things get interesting. I have been buying 2 sets of most of the JScottCampbell.Com exclusives even though really only 1 or 2 of the covers interested me. In these cases, I like Elektra Cover C (sketch) and X-Men: Gold Cover B (90s retro). I kept those books separate to go SS when I have the chance, and stuck the rest of the ones that looked worthy into my minimum grading order. All but one of the books hit, but now that I have the slabs in hand I'm feeling kind of attached to them! So, on the fence whether to keep them or throw them up for sale.

Most of the rest of the 25 books were all duplicates of these. Some hit 9.8, some did not. The only ones where none hit 9.8 where a Harley Quinn #1 Aspen/Turner variant (0/1) and the Vampirella JSC variant (0/2). They were for PC so a bit disappointing but I'll live.

Planning to submit my next 9.8 minimum grading order at Garden State Comic Fest in July, but I'm organizing the books for it now so that I'm not so rushed this time! I'm pretty excited after how well this one went.

Now I'm anxious to get all the Joe Jusko Corner Box SS books I submitted back. They were submitted at the same time as this order, but they went to CCS to be pressed before grading. I'll probably have those in hand, in mid-July at the earliest.

Attended the Funnybooks 25th Birthday Celebration today.

Found some Campbell and Hughes goodies in the $0.50/$1.00/$2.00 bins. An Artgerm too!

The Campbell Black Cat cover was the find of the day for me. Its not a 9.8 contender, but I recently paid a whole lot more than $2 for one that I also don't think is a 9.8 contender.

Got a few of my recent favorite Amanda Conner covers signed by the artist. She is always a delight to speak with, and seeing her at such a small venue is especially awesome.

I love her cover art (wish she had time to do some other titles), but that Harley Quinn #17 is probably my all time favorite of hers. I really love it. I have a better copy I'm hoping to CGC SS at NYCC. Fingers crossed that her and Jimmy will be there.
