Default All You Can Eat Buffet's Should be Illegal

I'm dead serious

First, most know me as a fiscal and social conservative. I hate the idea of banning anything ... the market should decide what works and what doesn't and I believe everyone should be able to speak with their $$$. But for this, I make an exception.

There is zero benefit to the all you can eat buffet. None. Absolutely nothing good comes from it and the madness needs to stop. Sure, some people will suggest to you "Ohh you have to go try this Chinese Buffet, it's terrific" or "Have you stopped by the Bucca di Beppo breakfast buffet ... WOW". I'm here to tell you these people are lying; or at the very least corporate shills who are out panning for restaurant business.

The greatest thing about the buffet is the IDEA of the buffet. "Ohh, I'm going to eat 40 different things and I'm going to love them all!". Nonsense. What you're going to do, is deprave yourself of food a little longer than you usually do before a meal, then go to a buffet, put a ton of unhealthy, average tasting food on 6 different plates, eat 2 of those 6 plates, complain about your troubles, then tip your waitress $2 for cleaning up your mess and bringing you 3 cokes in the process.

Then you leave, and you complain "Grrrr, I ate too much.". A month goes by, you pass a different buffet, you think "Ohhh, I wonder how many awesome things I can eat there" ... and the process repeats itself.

Think of all the food that is wasted. Earlier today, I went to a buffet; and a large one at that. Mohegan Sun has quite a large lunch (and breakfast, and dinner) buffet; five full sections of choices, fairly well stocked and the food is OK. I sit and I JUDGE. I watch as parents fill their kids plates with all kinds of stuff they're just gonna throw on the floor. I watch as one woman holds the oyster line up for 2 minutes so she can fit her 39th and 40th oysters carefully on the three plates shes juggling. I watch as people put plates of food together, only to look at them before returning to their table, and decide "Meh, I'll get something different" and leaving them at the end of the buffet where no one will notice.

All of that wasted food. All of that pain to eat as much as you can for no reason whatsoever. And the worst ambiance in the world; 200 people fit tightly into a small school gymnasium. Surely, there has to be a better way.

People, I'm looking for AYCEB reform ideas. I want to reform this industry so buffets can be celebrated or eradicated. No in-between.

My first idea; charge people less for the buffet up front, and add $5 baselines for the food they waste. So if the dinner buffet is usually $19.99 ... make it $15.99 but then charge people $5 extra for throwing food away and $10 extra for throwing a lot of food away (there's a cap). Waitress / Waiter will make the final call; but to assist in helping people decide if they like something or not, put very small plates next to each item so they can grab a bite to taste. Most buffets just have BIG plates everywhere, and they crave to be filled!

OK that's it. Rant over. Off to bed. Help me reform AYCEB!

i love in a bit so pleasant area. Every place I've ever been to that has had "we charge for food thrown away" has removed those signs, figure because of disagreements and the subjectivity in what amount is okay to discard.

Not a fan of buffets anywhere outside casinos and hotels personally.

All you can eat buffets aren't the only ones that waste food.. anyone who has worked retail, grocery stores, or in any restaurant they are all guilty. In the mean time there are thousands in our own country who are starving and that should never happen.

Seems like such an easy fix but too many idiots out there to work together.

Huh......when I go to a buffet I don't deprive myself of food beforehand and I fill and eat in their entirety about 3-4 plates as well as a salad plate before hand and dessert plate after. I also do not leave thinking I ate too much.
Think it's a whole lot weirder you went to one just to watch people........

I wanted to mention a documentary that I saw a while back that talks about this subject. There are pig farmers in Las Vegas that buy the food waste, clean the trash out, boil it and feed it to their pigs. Not to be confused with panga (sp?) food from the Philippines.

I go to a local sushi buffet and they do make you finish what is in front of you before asking for more, or charge each person $5 extra if there is anything left at the end. People may see this as "rude" but it certainly limits people just binging mindlessly on items

The caveat is, while it's AYCE, a waitress brings you the rolls made to order, along with the appetizers. Nobody is going through a line on their own and picking the items.

I agree. When you think about it, what do you think what happens when things expire at a grocery? Some might go to a local homeless shelter but most gets pitched. Me personally, I think there should be more buffets. All the variety is a plus.

i used to like going to ryan's, but people sneezed near the food so i never got to go back.

i do think a fee should be added if they waste food. i've never been to golden corral. what is that like?

I go to Vegas every year and go to 4-5 buffets in my week stay there. I rarely waste any food but I do go to buffets because of the variety.

Most buffets here have a fee for wasting food. If you take a plate and its not adequately finished from consumption, they charge you $5/plate. Most all you can eat sushi places charge you roll price for sushi that goes uneaten after being ordered.

I completely agree with you 100%

I never have any desire to go to buffets. The only time I go to an buffet is when I go with friends/family and because that is what they want.
Will never stuffed myself when I am there. I will only eat sufficient portion and amount of food when there. So in their mind when I go to AYCEB it is not worth the price of admission for me.

The amount of food folks waste and seeing folks stuffed themselves until they can barely walk is disturbing to me. Another thing is the quality of food that is offered. Its crap IMO.

I go frequently. I like and enjoy the buffets. I cant say I always eat whats on my plate, but very rarely is anything that tastes decent left on it. I enjoy the fact its hot and ready, and there's a wide vareity:

chinese for example as there's so many different stir fry combos I enjoy). lets me get a little of everything.

Seafood buffets nummy (well you can keep your alaskan pollock, Im preferring the shrimp and crab).

pizza Buffets - a little more limited on choices, but generally can still find enough to enjoy.

Your standard Big Boy, Golden Corral (asked above - think Ponderosa) - you can snack/sample, and generally find something. Can be hit/miss, but once again I really prefer the variety more than anything.

Been known to waddle out of a few too...so dont get my wrong. Overeating at one is very easy to do. I've seen lots of waste, but I wonder how much of that is due to the quality of the food verses the individual being full. Im sure we've all had plenty that looked good but was either very bland or didnt taste right.

Or we could just ban idiots. The same person who holds up a buffet line probably also takes an overflowing grocery cart into the 15 items or less lane, and then waits until the cashier is finished bagging to start fishing around for cash to pay the bill.

We go once in a while. It's nice when you have younger kids and don't have wait a hour for your food.

no thanks. There are some sushi buffets that charge you for any leftovers. But they watch your every move. Do not need to go out and spend my hard earned money being watched like a hawk by the waitress who makes it her mission to "catch" me.

It is hilarious when i go to a china buffet and the fat man and fat lady are there fighting for the crab legs that do not even taste good. It is pretty pathetic.

I must say though, I am very hungry now...

Is this thread related to the rumor that Andy Luck busted his shoulder trying to pick up an overloaded plate at the Golden Corral by Washington Square Mall???
