The problem is the price tag of $1,200. This wouldn't be worth $1,200 if there was an Ohtani base auto in every case, let alone him being SP'd. There is nothing to like about this product at anywhere close to this price. This used to be a $700 product at release, and that was retail. Now the COST is $700 and people already want to mark it up to $1,200. Unfortunately this creates the mindset in some people that if they don't lock in at $1,200 now they will regret it and cases will go even higher. So people are already putting deposits down just in case. Aaron Judge did not make Topps Chrome worth the price even when it was cheaper, so why anyone would expect this to be any better I do not understand. |

A lot of people didn't lock in early on heritage and got burned. If Ohtani and this rookie class is hot, this product will rise too. It's herd mentality. People don't want to be left out if this is a huge hit, hence the early deposits on cases. The one advantage (or disadvantage) will be the fact that the season will be half over by the time this comes out, (Aug 1st) leaving the buyer time to make a decision. |

If I'm reading dealernet correctly, Topps Chrome Hobby was $100/box ($1200/case) at release last year, peaked at $144/box ($1728/case), and is currently $128/box ($1536/case). Blowout is currently at $1599 case for 2017. Given then insanity of the Ohtani hype right now, $1140/case for 2018 (Blowout's current price) seems reasonable. Obviously this will rise and fall with Ohtani's performance, but right now I don't think it is a stretch.

You skipped the part where 2017 dropped to $89 or less in the offseason because it had a massive print run and hadn't come close to drying up yet, despite having the hottest rookie of all time plus multiple other breakout rookie stars, and despite the fact that presells started at $62 and very gradually went up as people bought rather than starting high. Considering what the print run is likely to be on 2018 the current price is ludicrous (as it is on Bowman). |

Topps/distributors and even major on line sellers (blowout) have really had a nice run these last 3-4 years. The hot rookies have been driving product and pushing prices through the roof. I just wonder when the roof is going to cave in. (honestly I don't see it happening this year even if Ohtani doesn't live up to expectations as this rookie class looks strong) It's going to be another year of high prices. I'm honestly looking at stadium club (which I never buy) as this seems to be the only product right now that is reasonably priced as a pre-sell. Last edited by blackbears86; 03-08-2018 at 09:32 PM. |

There will be a lot of surplus either way. Distributors are sitting on it and will put it "on sale" in the offseason after they've milked what they can out of creating artificial shortages. |

Yes, but if they come out selling high, no one will drop the absurd money on something marked up 2x normal presale cost, then if it is a crap product and no one wants it, they won’t be able to sell it. There comes a point when stuff is just too high. Total greed, which pretty much sums up a lot of this hobby.

Agree, my point was group breakers are a drop in the bucket compared to what the size of the print run will be. They could still be all in on this and it will still drop in the offseason regardless. |

Especially when retail is very similar to hobby. You get almost the same odds on most color in retail plus the added bonus of green refractors and green autos, sepia and/or pink. At today's retail price you can have 288 packs of hobby or 496 packs of retail with virtually the same odds on everything except autos. I'll take the extra 200+ packs of retail for the same price all day long.

I bought a blaster case from BO just now. The price of 3 boxes. These 2018 Topps prices are crazy!

You better get in soon. I bet the price of a retail blaster will go up as we get closer to opening day.

Got lucky. pulled the trigger last night on 6 blasters and 12 value packs at "retail pricing" (which is a deal because no taxes!) plus free shipping.
Got my sepia/pick refractors covered! |

100% yes. Topps chrome is the one product where retail is a pretty solid deal, especially with the sepias/pinks. Topps adding green to the mix makes buying this a no brainer, especially at current hobby prices. |

This product is live the first day of the National. If going to the National, there could be some added value depending on the wrapper redemption program for this year. But what will case prices be at that time?
