Default Panini duplicating serial numbers?!?!?!

My LCS collects cards to take to Beckett for grading once a month. One of the collectors who submits is a Kevin Durant super-collector. On our last order, the individual submitted 2 sets of KD short prints from Totally Certified (green numbered /5). In both sets, there were 2 matching cards with the identical serial number (ie - two green base #2/5; two green jersey #4/5).

This is obviously an odd thing and kind of suggests that one may be a fake. The representative from Beckett said that this is not a common mistake, and that they could not grade either of them due to the risk of one not being authentic (one of the green base was actually previously graded by BGS, and he said if they had known there was another one out there with a matching serial #, they would not have graded the first one).

The representative from Beckett attempted to contact Panini about this to get an explanation and/or verify the authenticity, but could not get anyone to return a phone call on it. This is obviously very frustrating to the owner, as he now has a couple of very sp'd KD cards that cannot be graded, and could be accused of being fake, should he decide to sell.

Has anyone seen this before? There are obviously many hypothetical scenarios in play, but you would think Panini owes somebody an explanation (not that they actually care). I have seen the cards in person, and they are identical, definitely not fakes. My best guess is Panini produced multiples by accident and they somehow got released, though likely not through pack-outs. Someone suggested this could be a potential legal issue, but that seems a bit extreme to me.

Any thoughts/info?

That sucks for the owner.

When i got to the bottom and read the legal issue part I actually spit out some coffee laughing.

I thought the same thing. I get what the issue would be, but there's gotta be zero chance of getting anything out of it.

I kinda wanted to see if anyone else has seen this though. I would think other collectors would be upset if their cards # /5 actually have 10 copies or something.

This is a picture of all the people who are shocked that Panini could screw something like this up:

I guess someone could keep hammering on the door until they answer, but I doubt Panini is going to admit to not being able to figure out how to go 1...2...3...4...5done!

Agreed. I expect if they do respond they'll just shrug it off as a mistake. I would hope that the least they would do would be to take the time to call Beckett and confirm that it was a mistake so the guy could at least get his cards graded. Not sure who at Panini to contact though.

Could be an internal card produced as a replacement in case the original card got damaged.

These are supposed to stay in house but some may have slipped out anyways.

I know Benchwarmers has done this in the past.

Really not surprising. Panini quality control is a joke.

I'm assuming this is where the new "Replay" product came from.
